I would say none of those. It is just our culture, who we are. It that same reason Canadians politely clap when an Olympian gets a gold.

Cultures are difficult to change but am sure i don't want it to change either. Otherwise i'd be Amarikin as so well put previously.

WD9, Good to see our families next generation cheer and yell... to get them this excited and patriotic about changing the CWB!

I have faith... and hope... that the heart WILL pursue truth and honesty...

These folks are a dim reflection of us... but their genetic ID still best reflects the 'better half' of their parents!

OK... she doesn't read this often... but fortunately she is smarter than I am... and prods me to keep going and never give up! It must be that she is a fiery red head... and got lied to once too often by the CWB!

Actually... I can't blame her... do you know how many new houses she could have built... if the CWB had given us just one 'no-cost' export license?

Good thing we are a hardy bunch... and the CWB knows it... even more now after the Supreme Curt denial of the CWB leave to appeal!

You gotta admit more than a few unreserved CDN cheers went up when:

"Canadian Jon Montgomery was able to climb one spot in his final run to capture the gold medal tonight at the Whistler Sliding Centre.

Martins Dukurs of Latvia - the eventual silver medalist - was unable to put down a flawless run, critical if he wanted to hold on this his first place position after 3 runs and lost to Montgomery by .07 seconds.

Alexander Tretyakov of Russia had an incredible start and a fantastic run to edge the silver medalist's older brother Tomass for the bronze medal.

This is Canada's second Olympic title in as many Winter Games, Duff Gibson of Canada won the men's skeleton gold medal in 2006."!

It is true, Larry I sc****d the facade when I ran for the CWB, and found the reason we like the CWB is we all get the same. Even some the most ardent capitalists proclaimed the virtue of collectivism. No worries the neighbour will sell for more. No worries if the same is less, it is the same for all, there is comfort there.

This is why even after the myth is destroyed, and the CWB is declared to be an agency under control of the federal government, proof of confiscation of capital by the Government of Canada, the nation that is heralded at the Olympics as the true north stong and free, the response is mute. Even from Alberta the most American thinking province in the union, nothing.

The BOD normally active in the defence of the myth of farmer control, makes no apologies for previous statements of farmer control now proven false. It is business as usual. No export permits are offered. Western farmers remain like a prisoner found innocent but still in jail, and the nation is mute.

The PM who chastises China for human rights says nothing. The civil society Liberals, the NDP, the Greens, nothing.

I believe even if you are a supporter of the CWB in light of the Supreme court ruling, this nation and the Parliament that has control, can no longer justify maintaining individuals capital, if even one person disagreed. Ownership of farmers capital should not be a majority decision governed by Members of Parliament.

We watch the Olympics. Tom.. we hear our anthem, see our flag waved, feel the pride everywhere overflowing on the streets. We celebrate being Canadian; a culture of many origins be it race, religion and poltical ideals.
            A wonder to believe.

I believe the Supreme court decision is very simply agricultures Olympic stop watch. The course is run.

At the Olympics in the face of global competition we can measure our success in athletics with medals on podiums, in agriculture it is in the faces of our youth who chose to farm and in the system we leave as our legacy to them so they can. It is also in how we respond to the generations old question which began with the war measures act: who has the right of ownership of the capital produced on farms in 2010.

We have a torch. I believe we need a light.

A few years ago I had the opportunity to share dinner with the trade lawyer who won a rather important trade dispute for Canada in hogs. He was from the U.S. and while getting to know the Canadian landscape in preperation for the case he saw some perplexing differences between the east and west. In the east the grain farmers had gotten rid of their wheat board but the hog guys still seemed to love their single desk. While in the west the hog guys had gotten rid of their single desks but the grain guys hadn't.

I don't think it's a question of easterners just wouldn't put up with this kind of BS as Larry's friend thinks. When they have no choice they do. And it's the same in the west.

I really think it has very little to do with what farmers want, or the principle invovled. The CWB works for the industry and the Government of Canada. Which is why the election will never reflet the will of those who produce the majority of the grain.

Hopefully one day we will have a BOD that believes in efficiency at the very least, and we might hope, the princple of individual rights and freedoms.

But it is correct to say that many do support the process because it is one less decision to make, it is a common denominator even if it breeds ineffiencies at all levels of the trade.

And this really sucks because it appears we are headed into another cycle of income where every 1$/MT will count, and we are still carrying the full load of inefficiencies created by the CWB.

To make the Olympic comparision it is like heading to the medal run, with an
elephant for a mandatory partner in our luge. Problem is she gets stuck in the track in 60 or more years, resulting in a heap pile of accumulated waste, tough to clean up easier to ignore.

Don't despair free booters. Apparently the WTO is poised to rip the guts out of Kanada in the near future. Then you'll get the free for all that you'll wants. Let it be better than the oat market or the forage scene! Then we'll git to see how greedy the grain companies and r/r people can really be, should be a fun ride. Hope it doesn't lower land values, butt methinks it is likely. Gag ain't seen nothin yet. Don't ferget to boost the power of your home computer, cause you'll be usin it at lot, to score big deals and market yer hi quality produce.............

It is about economics; nothing more - nothing less. Eastern Canada has been getting $1.50 or more for red winter wheat for a very long time - the U.S. from 50 cents to $1.00. If the single desk was extracting transparent premiums, why would you want to get rid of it?

There are no premiums for western Canadian wheat, barley and durum farmers - just discounts to the world price. The Americans get pissed because the CWB lowers the world price of wheat. That is reality. The CWB's spin is that the Americans don't like the market power the CWB enjoys.

If the CWB were raising world prices - do you think the U.S. would mind? Not for a nano-second.

It should be about economics but unfortunately for too many people it's not.

If your goal is to give only larger farmers influence over CWB operations then your suggestions will certainly do that.

However, if your goal is to achieve market choice through elections it is illusional.
                                - It flies in the face of reality that the Government NOT farmers control the CWB;
                                - If CWB propaganda is so strong that it still has farmers believing in farmer control through elections in stark contrast to the clear ruling of the court, it is inconceivable that "open-minded" elected directors would not be bambuzzled by crafty CWB bureaucratic propaganda. We already see that one "pro-choice" director, (whether wittingly or unwittingly) implies on Agri-Ville that pooling is the monopoly rather than the single desk.
                                - It is only speculation that larger farmers would vote for market choice.
                                - It accepts the socialist principles that a farmer can vote on how their neighbor markets their grain. Not only is it morally unethical, but in Canada such intrusions on property rights can only be done legally by Parliamement or the provincial governments.
