    Dry out there

Very dry here. There is big grass fire out of control a
few miles south of here. The fire is a few miles wide
many miles long. I think it is even drier than last year.

Not here, just walked 3/4 mile across the field to get my tractor from another yard site and before I thought there was not much snow left. In reality it is all water. Soon to look for a place to run off.

Today was our warmest day yet. It was 5 degrees. I was out in the field pushing snow away from my piles of grain, and nearly got stuck. Had to pull out the truck. I did see a bare snowless patch on one hillside though. Countryside is generally white still. Nice slow melt. As for runoff amounts not sure yet. I cut a couple of trees down today to make room in an approach. Snow was still over my knees. I feel for you guys who may be dry. Lots of time to get rain yet? For your sakes I hope so.

I was gonna start a thread on whether anyone still had snow or not. I guess I don't have to anymore.

Yesterday it was 19 c here today was 15 c here with 50 km winds gusting to 70 km/hr. Really dried things out. The fire was out of control with the wind today.
Really dried things out with the wind today. Looks like the end of April with brown grass. No run off to speak of. Pastures are dry and it showed it today with the fire the way it spread.
Hopefully all the fog we had in Jan and Feb brings some moisture so far it has been wind.
We never lost a crop in March yet so we got some hope yet.

jag. was surpised to go out to farm in southest sask.to how much the snowmelt was. If this contiues we will be pumping water next week. it is unsettling after 5 in. of rain last fall and heay snow cover that we are short of gound water.

North to Canora yesterday then back to yorkton Melville and Regina. After the valley less snow as you go south. Water running. Melt wont take long at this rate.

-5 snowing, blowing with 60km wind. Snow moving from PA to Yorkton on radar. Below zero for highs all week. It's not spring here, all white this morning with 50% of old snow left. As always we are still too cold!

Melt is done here in North west sask. Absolutely no run off and majority of sloughs have but a trickle in them. Never seen this little water ever, even in 2001, 2002.
Meadow Lake received some snow last night, we had a trace.
We are in better shape than those west and south.
It is dry from here to south of Jagfarms, south west to Rons, and west out past Tom4 - huge area with no snow no runoff. Also very little soil moisture from last fall.

Dry out there! I'd be happy if it stays that way until producers "get it" that growing more and more for less and less is not in your interest. It only plays into the input selling industries interest. Since we won't voluntarily cut our production the 15% to 20% that's needed, such that the less we grow the more it's all worth, please bring on a major drought to right this situation.

The world is awash in cereals, and we are continually being informed we're in serious need of greater plant breeding efforts, particularly in cereals. Why, so a second larger wave of cereals that can be grown in dust and a summer fog can permanently glut the markets?

Grow your 5% more, encourage your rain gods to make it happen for your neighbours.

So according the government, The northeast never got several inches of rain in October, two feet of snow in the winter, and of course our soil was bone dry in the fall. Maybe thats why we were getting stuck with the combine, trucks and had a heck of a time even getting the crop out of the field due to slimy rutted dirt roads!!! LOL

Man, I'm trying not to be cynical, and i haven't had the opportunity to dig into the soil with my bare hands in other areas, but is it really that bad, or is the gov't out to lunch on other areas of the maps?

And yes, checking I agree we need to cut back production. If we all strove for 30 bushel canola, and were happy with that, we'd be getting 12 or 14 bucks for it. But no, lets go for 50, and get 8. (I sin in this regard too). But dang I seeded my first canola with 50 cent a pound excel, and grew reasonable (35) crops, and made way more money than I can with these ridiculous
Seed prices now. Don't miss the weeds and treflan though. LOL

The very least we should do; is to agree with freewheats comments. There isn't any logical way to think otherwise.

OK that map is screwed the more I look at it. We are low moisture. Come on. Last Oct it rained every single dam day. Jeez. But for winter snow yes we have been lacking. YEAH that's great. Snow is BS for our area it just makes sloughs. And funny yesterday I was out with Quad we do have sloughs. Hopefully April will get rid of them before seeding. Yes I also agree I made way way way way more money in late 70s growing bin run canola and using treflan than I am now with this GM modified BS. How low can we go attitude. All were doing is padding the pockets of grain companies. That's it. A once profitable crop is like all the rest.

We are geting screwed with canola seed. But it has become apparent now, that the reason there was such a large increase in seed cost, was that the chemical companies could see that glyphosate prices were going to drop dramaticly due to more choice. To maintain the bottom line, seed prices went up!
