Accountants Could Never Run a Farm!

    Read a good article http://www.agcanada.com/Article.aspx?ID=20070
And it proves again, any one who owns a small business can relate, that an accountant should look after your taxes and some planning but none of them would ever last as a owner of a business.
Example getting custom operators to do your work. Yea largest farmer in our area did that rent all land and get 80% custom worked. Its a real life lesson how to get into farming run with the big dogs and then disappear. You have nothing to sell at the end. Yes in theory putting excess cash into other investments works. Hell I made more money off real estate then any time farming but what accountants don't understand that even if its a farm company its yours, the share holders you answer to is your family not general public. Maybe the accounts could cut their fees back from where they are and guy would have the extra cash for his equipment costs. I am not saying Iron disease is good hell its killed lots of farmers but into days age in Western Canada where you have only 3 to 4 weeks to seed and maybe Sept to harvest and Oct and Nov is maybe, you have to be able to get in and out in quickest possible time. Last year prime example had harvesters booked in spring for fall, I finished two days before them. Plans are great every one should have one and write it down and change on the go, But sitting in Down town Regina and Telling the world how you once farmed with family is not reality in today's world.

What I am trying to say is have lots of advisers in your tool box, and use them accordingly.

All the accountants that I've ever had anything, to do with eventually went mental!! One disappeared into the sunset, never to be seen again and we got screwed by Revenue Canada. Another ended up at the local golf club, recording golf scores. In most cases accountants hand over documents to stenos, who in turn use computer programs to complete the accounting tasks, then issue a huge bill for services rendered!

Congratulations on another less then brilliant post SF3. I am a chartered accountant and I run, what i consider to be, a successful farming operation. A little bit of knowledge seems to be a very dangerous weapon for you.

              Good post lakenhealth

I happen to agree. My accountant runs a very successful farm as well.

S3 is just jealous because he can't keep up with the Vermeulens or that Dean Klippenstine won't talk with him because he is too big of a whiner!

I give him 2 more years sorry let's put wager on it. The gist of this post is in reality your accountant is good to have around but remember he works for you not the other way around. And paying 200000. A quarter is nuts sorry were dry land farming. Jealous yea that's a good one. But again show me A sucessful buisness man who is an accountant by trade. You need them for advise but you should know your farm and where its going. So bets on I'm in for 2 more years.

Okay, I will admit you have some points and before I read your reply I was going to post another thought and retract my dig to you.

                  My thought is this:

Did you ever consider that accountants are different. Many don't have direct farm experience and personally I feel it is a huge asset when my guy operates an active farm business as well. If they don't have a solid farm background then yes I can agree that the advice they give may or may not apply.

However I do disagree that as a blanket statement, they could never run a successful farm business. Every business is managed differently, some will be successful, some won't, its a fact of life.

If you have instances where accountants couldn't survive in the farming world, did you ever think that maybe they were too busy helping those who value their advice and services.

A dedicated accountant may choose his clients first over his farm enterprise.

Yes sask99 your also right not all acct should be thrown into the same pot but there are a few that work real hard trying to convince farmers have been doing it all wrong from there towers in the city. Then when the farms done they move on to their next great find. History repeats itself we have been here before and the ones who can see that will prosper. Busy trying to get barley out of durum, yes durum take feed price and juice the crop and fruck the CWB your actually higher than malt barley for a return but you need a big yield.

From the confusion of that last line, sounds like you are quoting your freshly out of SIAST bookkeeping diploma kid that works for FBC....
