How much time have we left?

    Dear Charlie,

I wonder ho Canada stacks up?

    "SOIL

An estimated 75-billion tonnes of soil is lost annually with more than 80 per cent of the world's farming land moderately or severely eroded. Soil in China is being lost 57 times faster than it can be replaced through natural processes. In Europe that figure is 17 times and in the United States 10 times and five times as much soil is being lost in Australia. A recent conference was told that world soil could vanish within 60 years if action is not taken."

You hear dire predictions like this all the time. If they were anywere close to true you would not see the wheat surplus would you? I am hoping this was true wo we could get gluts under control but I am afraid that the scope of the problem is blown out of proportion.

you're wishing for soil degradation? i hadn't thought of that as a longterm strategy for prosperity. oh i get it, it will happen on everybody else's farm but not yours. lol.

In Canada we have forever. No place on earth has adapted no-til like we in western Canada. Down east and in the states, they plow, disc, cultivate, vertical till, and mash the snot out of their dirt, then they wonder why it can't soak up moisture, and washes away, and floods so bad. They say no-til would never work where they are. I tend to disagree. To each his own. When'ed you last see someone plow in western canada? When was the last dust storm in a strongly no-til area? Let the other countries keep losing soil, and let us continue to build our soils. Would be an exciting time to farm, thats true. But alas, like global warming, ozone holes, and DDT, this sky is falling idea will not come to fruition...
