    Icelandic Volcano

The cooling effect of volcanic ash, carried in the jetstream , could have serious implications for crop production this year. Depending on the length of time the eruption lasts, there could be world wide cooling. Record production, maybe not, if heat units are down and growing season is shortened. Should be some interesting action in the futures market.

I too think it may make things interesting with markets and crops, particularly in the northern hemisphere. I will stand corrected, but I don't think it just blew today, but is making news do to shutting down air traffic. If it spews for a month or longer there could be some bigtime consequences.

Will farmers tighten there grip on old stocks?

Larry Weber, has the volanco in Iceland become any of the conversation in the marketing world? is it too small of an event to spend time on, if not, what lenght of time might it have to spew ash at it's current rate in order to effect markets? effect crops in the northern hemisphere?

from the following Wall Street Journal link...."Experts say the Icelandic eruptions could continue on-and-off for months, potentially leading to continued delays and closures." (referring to air traffic)

Been watching this develop over the last month or so One interesting thing to note is this is the baby one, the big one is located close by and to my understanding the big one has always during recorded time gone off after this little one . Read this article ( and yes Ihave to learn how to post links) http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/apr/15/iceland-volcano-weather-french-revolution

Go to MSNBC mar 23 science and tech. Very interesting . Previous eruptions of the larger volcano Katla have caused crop failure in Europe. These are one of the events that should be mitigated by a world food reserve, but of course it will never happen.

Do you remember Mt ST. Helens, and what a miserable summer we had?

I thought 2009 was the year without a summer.

Mount Pinatubo's eruption in 1991 in the Philippines was the event that caused mid May seeded wheat crops in 1992 to be green well after 120 days of growth. Phenomenal yields resulted. We do not need another mountain of wheat from a cooler ashy summer.

there is a differance worth mentioning, between 1991 and 2010. In 1991 we were in the midst of a sun cycle peak, in 2010 we're in the midst of a sun cycle lull.

st helens is a normal volcano I believe not going to go dancing along the crater rim myself but still , the real monster is the one lurking under Yellowstone, which by the way is overdue as well.....something like every 600000 years it goes off.

In 1992 my wheat seeded may 7th yielded 32 bushels of 45 lb sparrow crap. I sure do remember that year.

There is an old guy around here that says every year that ends in a "2" freezes. So we should be O.K. this year. This rain we just got was also 90 days after a major hoar frost.
