    big drop in Durum acres

There is a big drop in Durum acres in our area this year. In our area it is 86 percent durum compared to 14 percent spring wheat most years. There lots of farmers who have grown nothing but Durum for the last 25 years are cutting way back on the durum
    .
Spring wheat, canola, canary seed, mustard, replacing Durum acres.

Some farmers are not seeding any Durum at all.

In our area its a few of larger guys who seed durum its usually not a crop of choice. But we are dropping by close to 40% and talked to the other three guys and out of 10000 acres in total last few years it will be 3000.

A drop in durum acres certainly seems to
be the trend, even the CWB guys are
starting to consider other crops. I am
of the opinion that oil prices will
approach levels seen a few years ago,
putting a dramatic upward pressure on
wheat prices. I would argue that grain
prices are more a function of energy
      prices and speculation rather than
supply and demand. In twelve to
eighteen months from now, after a
dramatic increase in the price of durum,
I anticipate farmers to curse the CWB
      because "they" provided incorrect
market information. At the same time, I
have no idea how you can run a business
growing durum and certainly would not
grow it myself. Just some thoughts. I
      have been wrong lots before.
