When Is it to wet to Seed?

I sure am not going to mud the crop in like I have done in past years. If this weather trend continues we may not get much crop seeded before the end of May. How many farms make contingincy plans in the case that you cant seed? We have gone through this before in east central Sask, and it probably wont be the last time. When we have mudded the crop in it never turns out, ruts, premature bolting in canola, dround out spots, baked hard like concrete giving poor emergence, nitrogen washed down, root rot, poor yeild etc. Havent heard anyone talking about this yet but im sure it isnt far off.

Yes not that many years back had 100Lbs of gas going down with seed the crop yellowed later on, Why becasue the nitrogen and rain was going down faster than a sick root. To much water is a curse not a blessing. Sorry we needed this in June and early july.

Does canola and heavy harrows with valmar work?

Canola is the worst thing to seed in wet ground, if you cant seed it normally it isnt worth doing. Ive seeded it with a valmar on harrows and have had poor results. It usually starts ok but due to the lack of fertlizer and no oxygen in the soil it bolts and stops at about 1.5 ft tall very poor yields. Definatly not worth $40 per acre seed. Wait till it gets dry enough, then seed watever has the shortest growing season or just summerfallow and collect wet acre money.

Burn the straw as soon as it warms up enough, goes against every thing worked for with min tillage but hey at least it will be warm ground.

It is way to early to panick yet. It is better to seed later then to mud the crop in. A guy can't afford a below average crop with the cost of inputs these days. Nobody can grow a crop in mud.
