Excretion Flows from Regulatory Checkoff Powers

I didn't forget your question, gusty:

"Parsley, What's the difference between my trial proposal of a checkoff as it exists now, with a public opt out. and your compromise on the CWB.
I'll paraphrase as I understand the "No cost export license

The CWB can exist as is except no cost opt out licences are granted"

I have no compromise on the CWB.

    1. I want a NO BUY BACK license the same as Quebec and Ontario get. I apply for an export license, get the license automatically and go my way. Licensing should be just that.....Getting export documentation.(The Feds won't order the CWB to issue no-buyback licenses in the West)

    2. A no cost license means I apply for a license, and it may be $0.00 today for ME,(while $0.69 for profarmer BUT $71.00 for hlg) but some CWB grunt decides tommorow it will be $4.29 for me, and two months later, the buyback will cost $49.95 and have I got a deal for you. Legislated authority puts me at the mercy of greedy projects, greedy staff, greedy politicians.

Once bureaucrats, and that includes the bureaucrat mentality at Western grains Foundation, get a little whiff of the possibilty of more money, they'll go for it like a bull moose in rutting season. They'll tramp farmers down heading for the cash.If they have MONOPOLY authority to do it, a farmer is sunk.

It is why it is so very very important to keep checkoffs voluntary. Look firsthand, what the CWB have done. Learn from it.

I don't believe gusty, that organ donation should be manadtory either. Your liver belongs to you. So do your kidneys. And yes, nobody would want my pea sized brain. LOL

    gusty says:
"Someone is in the monopoly unless you send your letter in."

Extra yearly staff costs. Extra correspondence. Loss of good will.

All costly items the Foundation does not now have.

Unless of course, the staff are trying to build another empire and have some friends who need a cushy job.

Pitting one group of farmers against another by publishing names, gusty, is socially reprhensible.

I look at the checkoff as a gift.

      Not a right.

      A gift.

      Think about that.

Heard Harper just stepped up to the plate and pledged his heart to Greece. Hope he does the same here - we'll see.

Do you support research and development?

Who should fund research and development? Does anyone with no
money in the pot have the right to set direction for R and D?

            wd9,

"Those that benefit from other peoples funding suck."

Can you look at funding as a gift?:

"Those that benefit from other peoples gifts suck."

            1. Each one of us fund other people 24/7 by way of taxes.

            2. You complain about your designated Area neighbor benefitting, and yet you seem blissfully at peace with the fact that Quebec farmers get more grant money than any other province in Canada. If you insist on complaining about your freeloading DA neighbors, you should spend more time researching instead of indulging in other activities that make you blind to the fact that there are chronic gift recipients. Quebec is the main Federal ag dollar-leak.

            3. The world does not owe you or any organization or any corporation any kind of funding. Most funders would appreciate a thank you instead of an entitlment bitch session. Right now, your focus is on the NUMBER of funders. Is your current whining an indication you will next belittle the AMOUNT of of the funding gift?

4.Be hopeful you never need an organ transplant. "Those that benefit from other peoples gifts suck." Pars

If farmer checkoffs are gifts, do you consider public sector investment in
agricultural research and development a welfare payment to farmers by
              taxpayers?

                Dear Charlie,

We all have 'money in the pot'... if we farm.

We all do R&D... that is what farming is.

THe railway payment ($80m?) to Western Research was from all of us farmers... matched by gov in most cases... more of our childrens $$$!

                  Charlie,

Since we have no property rights in Canada... and leave this life with nothing... physical...

Provision of food to our neighbour has clearly become 'in the public realm' and of interest to everyone not just food producers.

Cheap good food... is the basis to all peaceful societies!

What did you mean by 'Welfare"?

                  Are 'carbon credits' welfare?

                  Is the CWB welfare?

Gov regulation of our farms is 24/7.

Soooo we work for the government in any event! Does this mean income is 'welfare' for food produced?

Perhaps the question is the priority on research and development.
Other countries around the world have well funded programs that range
from public sector mostly (not sure the model in the current world but
Ukraine did have this model) to private sector mostly (Europe and US) to
a blend of private and public (Australia via GRDC).

I note the reference to GRDC and at least some talking about this model
for Canada. I would pay attention to this. I also note the European
model as well where plant breeding is mostly private sector but paid for
at farm level by collecting royalties/end use levies for seed varieties at
the farm level. You want access to a variety, you pay.

I consider taxpayer money targetted at agriculture as a gift. Always keep in mind that taxation can be reduced by half tommorow. Or ag tax money can be redirected to mining, for example.

An entitlement attitude is not only annoying, but it is harmful in the long run.

                      Whatever happened to being grateful?

                        sumdumguy,

Bailing out Greece is the worst action for THEM as well as EU taxpayers. Greece has to stop throwing tantrums, grow up and make a living for themselves instead of nurturing a sense of entitlement.

                        Looksee from Wiki:

"Greek agriculture employs 528,000 farmers, 12% of the total labor force. It only produces 3.6% of the national GDP (about $16 billion annually). A large number of the country's immigrants are employed in the agricultural sector of the economy, as well as construction and public works.

Currently, Greek agriculture is heavily subsidized by the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), with controversial results. Certain deductions of subsidies are planned within the next decade."

Greece produces a wide variety of crops and livestock products. Fisheries are also playing an important role while forestry plays a secondary role

                          Parsley,
I went to a food show in Montreal last month, I found there was quite repsectable representation by food companies from Greece, and Cyprus for what its worth. Maybe they see the writing on the wall.

And what is respectable? No cleavage?

Too many trade show addicts are overpaid government employee bloats who fancy flying first class around the world using taxpayer money, with no reponsibility, no measure of outcome, and less care. Entitlement.

Trade shows, and I get the trade show agenda from the Federal Government, make me wince.

Look at the numbers I posted on Greece. Farmers are obviously not creating wealth or banking it. Agreed?

So, are professional trade show optomists flitting around the world on taxpayer money? Or was that just a "long time ago", (as my kids used to make excuses, lol)?

From what I observe, Greece seems not interested in a head down, ass up approach (working hard).

I'll be interested to read your comments about what you discovered at the Montreal show. Pars

IMF agrees to bail out Greece to the tune of $140
billion. It appears the Greecy wheel gets the grease.
Maybe it's time to punt the IMF - they seem to
create issues on every continent. The next basket
case is Britain and that is bad news for our smarter
and better regulated Canadian banks. Good news
for CDN exporters is that Canuck Buck is cooling.
There is a good case for keeping interest rates low
as well - good news if you are borrowing, bad news
if you're trying to sock some away for your 'crippled
                              years'.
