would 50 bucks an acre suit you?

OK, so in light of not having any seed in the ground, and the prospect of such for the third year in 5 years,(actually in 2006-07 it was better, I got some seeded by now), I'm curious whether you guys would make it to next year with 50 an acre?

Take out 30 dollar rent, 10 or so for chemical if your lucky, 5 for fuel, 40 for debt, etc etc, and it doesn't leave a guy with much. ;(

I have precious little equity as a young guy. I don't see a way out, if I don't seed.

I'm so sick and friggin' tired of this crap. It really is unbeleivable farming in what was once in the top ten producing RM's in the province, and becoming probably the least productive since 2004. There is a reason our land is mostly under 500 an acre here.

I'm sick of being a downer on this site, but I am ill about this farming BS.

I have always found people can do the exact same thing and mother nature will make some look like a genius..And make some look like idiots..

Yeah I am a decent enough farmer, there aint many left who aren't, but the weather could be my downfall. Least I'll have something to blame it on.

One thing some people may not relize is that
emotion and context are not reliable when reading
what one is saying or writing.

It is something you do have to think about.

Thats why the hardcore internet geeks came up
with emotional sayings like lol(laugh out loud).

New guys response could be interpreted a number
        of ways.

yeah, thankfully there is lol. I know exactly what he meant and couldn't agree more. I have a few real dumb farmers around here, whose inheritance from daddeo has made them look quite smart, for example.

Well i would say peoples perscepcetion is not worth
worrying about, nor what your neighbour has.

I say this from experience because i never had no
daddy and have far less than most.

If somebody bad mouths me,i just punch them.

You dont have to do that more than once a
decade, and word gets around and people show
            respect.

And those have it alls, also have a road to walk
down and you really dont know what problems they
are personally dealing with.Sometimes i wish i was
smaller and simpilar with fewer commitments.

And if i go broke i'll just downsize and become the
            worlds largest asperogus farmer lol...

Hey cotton, I hate to say it, but you think a lot like me! That is what keeps me going, knowing other may look flashy, but they have issues I would never dream about. Take my bachelor neighbor. Loaded to the hilt, farms 1000 acres, but I wonder how lonely he is and how this may tear him up inside. Me, I've got 4 kidlets that are good kids, all of them.

Finally, if I am forced to quit, My plan may be to be western Canada's largest shepherd, largest cabbage grower, or yes I've thought of asparagus as well.

I guess what I meant was people should not get caucky if they get lucky with mother nature and one should try not to get too down if they get unlucky with mothernature. It is something that can make a huge differance and no one has any control over it.

Another thing I have always noticed is the people who farm with money can take alot more chances and their screw ups do not show up as much as those who farm for money. I have farmed for money all my life. I have made a living but very stessful on bad years..

You should consider getting a floater to seed your canola and put the fertilizer on at the same time. Harrow it in... 4 lbs an acre should be enough.

lots of guys did that in MB last year and it worked good.

I may try this, though it has a fair bit of risk. I did plane seeding in 2007, and if the summer turns out wet too, it seems the canola sucks due to low oxygen soil. Had that year dryed up some, I think it had been alright. I think if it gets dry nuff to harrow, I may try blowing it on with the seeder, at least that way you can get some nutrients on unlike with the plane... I have 1 field I'm sure I'll seed conventionally, its high land and was hayland, sprayed out in fall. Its firmish relatively speaking. I just need a few days to get on it. Was gonna be oats, but may switch to canola now.

Hey freewheet we have guys that could fall into a pail of ship and come out smelling like a rose or at least they tell you they did. Years of seeing farm financial statements I know most farms unless its inheritance, oil, Gas, potash etc are just squeaking out a living. Now buying low to obscene low and watching ones expenses does go along way. Floating on canola and fert if the truck will get on field and stay floating go do it. Harrow it and yes it will give you a surprise. One thing we can always count on in north east is rain and rain does help a screwed up seeding operation (to shallow to deep etc) most years.

Thats true sask farmer. When i did the plane seeding establishment was awesome, the saturation killed me.

Dont waste you time air plane or floating on canola Ive done it twice and results were poor and it wasnt $60.00 for seed. If the field is pre worked with fertilizer appied then go to it but it should be harrowed to get enough seed to soil contact. Dont expect more than 20bus/ac. If that is making you money go at it.
