    canola under snow?

Have a 2" blanket of snow covering everything here. Canola has been showing rows for about 4 days. Temp has sat at zero for the last 10hours and is still snowing so no sunshine and immediate warming. Is this canola hopelessly doomed or is there hope? Does the snow insulate it or freeze it? Do I start scrambling for seed to beat the rush? Anyone with similar past experience? Guessing it would be a week before we could reseed anyhow so time will tell?

If its just covered with snow you should be ok but if it goes today and then drops below zero your going to see damage. But just remember its a big canola crop thats coming.

We had similar conditions a few years ago. The snow isn't the problem , but the cool soil, stress on the plants, is. Ours hadn't emerged yet, but the damage was done. The crop never really recovered , 15-20 bus. Yours might be better , good luck. Crops here are being stressed from soil saturation.

What was the final count on rain for the last few days?

Sound like you guys in Manitoba got blasted.

It just can't be all that good for anything?

3 inches in our area, considerably more south of Winnipeg. Drainage has worked fairly well. If we don't get any more we should only lose 2 %. That dried out subsurface is our one saving grace so far. But that's done now.

We were in the same 'boat' with a dry sub-surface. But as well it is filled up and the last two days have put us in the same situation as the rest. Temps/sun next week were looking good but now it is changing for the worse every 6 hrs.
