Just wondering what experience people have or advice on spraying 28-0-0 on its own on 6 to flag leaf wheat or durum for protein boost or canola for yield. Or the pros and cons of spraying something with less N fertilizer, like a blend of NPK with micros(nitroboost)? Not sure yet of the 28-0-0 cost but a product like nitroboost is $12 an acre.

No matter what the fertilizer salesman tells you, the only sure way to grow high protein wheat is to have it literally swimming in nitrogen while its filling. Count on a minimum 60# of available N in any field that grows high protein wheat but the inverse is true too - if you want high protein wheat then you need a minimum of 60# excess nitrogen. On the other hand, there's not a whole lot of risk of loss unless the field routinely stands under water in the spring. You just have to be able to cashflow the excess nitrogen a year early.

You can't spray on 28-0-0 to gain protien. the only way it can be done and studies from Europe confirms this is by spraying on i'll get the fertilzer when i find it at the soft dough stage( thats when the wheat pops like a big pimple) the gain is 1 point or so

The fertilizer is a 21-0-0 foliar urea which has 2 lbs of N per us gallon. You can put it in with your herbicied or fungicied. Studies in europe are applying it to canola at flowering and wheat is being done in the USA as well with good results.
