pulling grain trailers with farm tractor??

I should have posted this question under machinery but I thought I would get more replies here.

How much hp would be required to pull a tridem grain trailer and converter with a farm tractor? I see some farmers doing this and it is a lot easier to find someone to drive a tractor at harvest than find a class 1A driver.
The tridem would be hauling 30 to 40 tonnes plus weight of trailer and converter. Would be from field to yard. With the feilds being so soft it could be hard on clutches on trucks with inexperienced drivers.

    Jag,

On the practical side... a grain cart works much better. Park the trailer over the auger and use it as the surge.

The skill of your driver will need to be there... either way.

I believe you will find overloads will be treated the same... either way (truck or farm tractor) on road hauls. It may be nessasary to pull duals off 4wd to work in tight spots unloading.

i think you will find it's less about horse power and more about the ability to stop. We have used our 4wd for a similar operation but with out any weight on the tractor it becomes a safety hazard.

you need 200hp with a heavy FWA.
I have 2 trailers with converters and during harvest I switch with a single tractor to haul the grain to the bins. Works fast and save
