Estimates of Alberta Crop Seeded Area - 2010
From the July 19, 2010 Issue of Agri-News
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The market outlook for agricultural commodities is the primary factor affecting producers' decisions on crop acreage," says Chuanliang Su, crop statistician, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. "Other factors include soil moisture conditions in spring, farm input costs and the need for crop rotation."
On June 23, 2010, Statistics Canada released its report entitled Preliminary Estimates of Principal Field Crops Areas, Canada, 2010. Based on the report, in 2010, the total seeded area of all principal field crops in Alberta is estimated at 18.36 million acres. Alberta producers have seeded more acres to canola and oats, but fewer acres to durum wheat, compared to 2009. The total area seeded to spring wheat and barley are similar to 2009, while dry peas acreage is up significantly. Summerfallow area is pegged at 1.60 million acres.
With respect to the Alberta estimates for specific crops, a total of 5.96 million acres has been seeded to spring wheat, while total durum area is 420,000 acres. For winter wheat, total area is estimated at 175,000 acres. Overall, the total seeded area for all wheat is estimated at 6.55 million acres.
"Due to the delayed seeding caused by excessive moisture in spring this year, some producers may have seeded more barley and oats than intended earlier," says Su. Overall, Alberta producers have seeded four million acres of barley, and 985,000 acres of oats.
Additionally, the total seeded area is estimated at 5.20 million acres for canola, 960,000 acres for dry peas, and 160,000 acres for lentils.
Just to note, the above estimates are preliminary and subject to revision. Due to excessive moisture in spring, some fields were left unseeded. This is particularly the case in southern Alberta. Statistics Canada is expected to release the first production estimates of 2010 field crops on August 20, 2010. Revision on seeded area, if any, will be provided in the Statistics Canada production estimate.
