    Ukraine

Has just limited grain exports as well.
I think things could get very interesting here shortly.
Gota love the CWB initials btw - feed bly .58/bus and feed wht under a buck as well - what a complete and utter disgrace we have in place for a marketing board. Feed bly open market $3.5 off the combine right now. On a 100 bus crop that's about $300/ac diff. How TF is that even possible?

"How is it possible?" Well, there's two possiblities: either the wheat board is selling too cheap or (and this isn't mentioned much), the federal cabinet, which has to approve the guaranteed initial prices, is intentionally forcing the low initials to piss more farmers off with the CWB. Either way, we lose. Used to be a time the intials were set at about 75% of expected final price, now it's more like 25%.

The initial prices were based on June's #'s. The CWB will be asking to increase the initial price shortly according to an interview on the radio yeserday.

For what it is worth, the CWB sources very little if any feed barley via the pooling system. They (the CWB) cash trade feed barley via guaranteed delivery contracts and live prices either from farmers directly or from grain companies indirectly via tenders. The world has changed - nobody talks about it though.

Since the beginning of time, the process has been the same to get the two giant bureaucracies (CWB and the federal government) to get an adjustment payment out. Recommendation from the CWB, due diligence/review several federal government departments and voila 6 to 8 weeks later an adjustment payment. I note a suggestion was made to stramline this process over the summer. A different organizational structure and perhaps a contingency fund would see this process change as well.

Note the thread mbradrud started a while back. Would be interesting to compare Chinese malt barley prices to current world feed barley levels. Always interesting to ask where the profits from CWB cash trading activities go.

For what it is worth, the impact of the former soviet union countries drought has been way more for barley than wheat.

Just to get your blood boiling (maybe you don't care) but current elevator bids north central Alberta are $3 ish/bu. Backed off Vancouver international feed barley prices are likely close to $4/bu local elevator. A buck a bushel difference.

we're hearing of some $4-ish feed barley
deals coming together in alberta, through
the board. so it's starting to happen.

                  Thanks Brenda.

Did my homework and the best prices central Alberta I was given was closer to $3.50/bu.

A marketing idea is for anyone wanting to sell feed barley off the combine to stop by their local elevator and have a chat. You might consider putting in a GPO (grain pricing offer). The trade is sourcing for these sales and when the package comes together (price and volume), there are likely more opportunities.

Not sure destination. Sounds too big for just Japan.

I should note that the business got started at closer to USD $190/tonne. That is, not just a single package deal but rather business that has being getting put together over time.
