    Long Guns

MP's will vote whether or not Hoeppner's private member's bill should proceed to 3rd reading on 22 Sept.

Since this bill will impact farmers, what are your thoughts on the Long Gun Registry? Or gun licensing in general? Pars

What is the Big Frickin deal. Register your guns like you register your car and move on . There are far More important issues that need to be dealt with.

Any study that shows its benefit has been hidden by harper.
Now they want to become more like the U.S and go on a Prison building plan.Even though crime rate is dropping, Stockwell Day knows in his heart of hearts that crime is unreported and we need bigger and better prisons.

Thought for the day . The U.S has more people imprisoned than the rest of the world combined. Maybe it has something to do with privatization of prisons. Build them and they will come. The more imprisoned the more money for the shareholders. And Harper thinks we need to go to this?

This is actually very important vote. It will be one of the few times misguided government policy gets overturned in this country. Very important precedent. The registry is a tool for harassment of rural Canada by ignoramouses in urban Canada with the goal of confiscation. So the vote on the registry represents a lot more than a simple registration process.

            Mustard you said
"This Harper gov't never lets the facts get in the
way of any decision based on ideology"

I would argue the Liberals did this for years keeping the monopoly powers of the CWB and now the climate change advocates who do not base any of their claims on the facts.

Seems like all governments follow this format. Why shouldn`t more free votes be held. Isn`t that why we elected them, to represent us, not the party???

Next will be the butcher knife registry. Like
criminals register their weapons. This law is
useless. They could have spent the billions on
                education, crime prevention, etc.

Stop the waste of my taxes.

When the gun registry came in i read a article. A man, a farmer was out shoooting beavers or some other vermin. On the way home he had a heart attack and died in his pickup. The police arrived at his home and informed his wife she was a widow. She was standing in the doorway in a state of shock when the rcmp asked if there was other guns in the house, which to she answered yes. They took away his other long guns becuase his wife was not a registered gun owner. This will never happen to my wife. The police should be ashamed as anyone voting liberal. Many times from people who should know what they are talking about have said the gun registry had nothing to do about guns, in the fine print it gave police for any reason to enter someones home. This is why it was shoved down our throats.

I agree with mustardman, somebody get some balls and get this issue over with, if it's in, make it easier for the honest people to apply, if it;s out good bye. This is a prime example of something that if our government can't handle this wow we are in trouble with the real issues out there.
But this is just like Agrivation issue, the conservatives drug this out because yes us farmers were pissed at the way it was introduced and the cost etc. so rather than having a vote and get over with, it was drug out nearer to an election time just so they could remind us of those bad liberals. I am getting tired of being played here. The facts are that law enforcement should be making this decision, they are the experts and yes many law officials like it and many don't so make a decision and get over it. Billion dollars for gun registry, Billion dollars for one day of G-20 flop.

hlg makes a good point also, politicians want to tie every little easily solved issue into, you vote for us the whole party and we will do this or that, they are forcing us to lump in all petty issues into their party and we are to choose which party has the most of these issues which means we are going to loose out on other issues they are not in favor for, and we are. Most of these could easily be solved via free vote or perhaps referendum vote at election time like the U S does. Not the topic but our political system in this country is bogged down to this petty game playing on little issues, when other countries are developing long term strategies on how to keep their resources etc owned by their own countryment, we are selling out for short term gain politically with a major long term expense.

I have always wondered what the h*ll would make it cost a billion or 2. From a "good source", it appears that a Liberal friendly software company got $250 million to develop registry software. It did not work so they got another $300 million for a second try at it. Government could have got a program from computer savvy kids for peanuts! And to top it off NO paper trail for the auditor to hang the Liberals! Who are the crooks?
We need property owners to NOT be charged for protecting themselves or possessions with what ever weapon. As the law is now we are the criminal if we try! Scrap the registry monster, sorry to all those who wish it work, criminals DO NOT register!

Compare the following three countries with respect to their gun handling legislation and attitudes. Taken from Wikipedia:

                            Canada
The stated intent of Canadian firearms laws are to control firearms so as to improve public safety. However, this has been challenged recently and the long gun registry which has cost Canadians over $2 billion is in the process of being dissolved when Bill C-391 passes. While there is no Constitutional clause analogous to the United States' 2nd Amendment that succinctly spells out the right to keep and bear arms; the various pieces of legislation and Rights bills since the Magna Carta and the 1689 English Bill of Rights provide Canadians with similar rights to their US cousins.

Currently, every firearm is required by law to be registered in Canada. While licensing provisions of the Fireams Act will remain in order to ensure proper training and safe storage, Bill C-391 will remove the requirement for the registration of each non-restricted firearm.

Currently, users must possess a licence, called a "possession and acquisition licence (PAL)". A firearms safety course must be passed prior to applying for a PAL. A non-resident (i.e., non-Canadian) can have a "non-resident firearms declaration" confirmed by a customs officer, which provides for a temporary 60-day authorization to have a firearm in Canada.[7] There are three categories of firearms for purposes of Canadian law: non-restricted, restricted, and prohibited. Restricted and prohibited weapons may actually be owned and used in some circumstances

                            China
Gun ownership in the People's Republic of China outside of the military, police, and paramilitary is forbidden. Possession or sale of firearms results in a minimum punishment of 3 years in prison, with the maximum being the death penalty.

                            Switzerland
Switzerland practices universal conscription, which requires that all able-bodied male citizens keep fully-automatic firearms at home in case of a call-up. Every male between the ages of 20 and 34 is considered a candidate for conscription into the military, and following a brief period of active duty will commonly be enrolled in the militia until age or an inability to serve ends his service obligation.[35] During their enrollment in the armed forces, these men are required to keep their government-issued selective fire combat rifles and semi-automatic handguns in their homes.[36] Up until September 2007, soldiers also received 50 rounds of government-issued ammunition in a sealed box for storage at home.[37] In addition to these official weapons, Swiss citizens are allowed to purchase surplus-to-inventory combat rifles, and shooting is a popular sport in all the Swiss cantons. However Swiss gun laws are still stricter than in the US. Unlicensed persons are not permitted to carry weapons except under special certain circumstances such as travel to military training. Owners are legally responsible for third party access and usage of their weapons. Licensure is similar to other Germanic countries.

The 2nd ammendment was put in so Americans could defend them selves should the English decide to come back to retake their "colony". NEWSFLASH THEY ARE NOT COMING BACK LOL
