    1CWRS GDC

    Dear Charlie,

The CWB must be VERY short of 1CWRS...

This GDC expires Nov 19/10 and is at all points...

What can I say. Crisis creates the need for innovation.

What is the directors candidates view of solving some of the CWB delivery/sourcing issues? Are they willing to be creative on the pricing and delivery link?

My Dad always told not to fix things that aren't broken. This is not a problem in this case - the system is broken. The CWB has to move forward from 1950's thinking to something that reflects the new realities of the 21 st century. Supply chain management is critical.

A post I made on SF3's thread that is relevant to this one as well I think.

If we must work within in a regulated Grain There are many things flawed about the CWB and anyone who knows me including those in the CWB, know there are 2 things I really hate about our grain system in Canada.

      1. Wheat grading, although I understand the theory that we want to sell high quality wheat into special markets for a premium. I think more often we just end up competing with DNS and we don’t get the premium we intended. So for the most part I am not convinced that we see value for our grading system.
      2. Is price pooling, it sends poor pricing signals, is a poor indicator of what the market wants thus creating issues with transportation. Mostly it creates a lack of accountability.
These two issues are responsible for many of the issues in this thread in my mind.

One of the things I do believe the CWB helps with is shipping costs, orderly transportation, and without price pooling there SHOULD be value in a single desk.
Get rid of the price pooling, and tweak our grading system and I think we would make a major step forward in responding to market conditions.

I would be curious to know what percentage of Wheat sales actually extract a premium due to our grading system, vs what just ends up in the mainstream competing against Dark Northern Spring. My guess the premium Markets could be satisfied though IP contracts that could have more stringent grading parameters.
Oh well that’s my verbal vomit for the day.

On a happy note this weather is awesome!

Strange that a domestic processor can originate crop 365 days a year. A maltster, flour miller, feed lot, canola crusher. There is no room for error. Animals starve to death without feed. To meet their sales commitments on canola oil and meal including logistics, a canola plant that crushs 2,500 tonnes a day needs a logistic system that draws in somewhere between 400 and 450 "B" trains each week. A maltster has to malt barley arrive in their to meet their customers the brewers supplied.

Is it that complicated to get high quality wheat and durum to Vancouver? I know their our quality problems on the prairies but.....?

Perhaps the best approach is to have all your customers neighbors. I have a friend whose business model is to sell 100 % of their crop production within a 100 mile radius of their farm. Many here will say stupid/impossible but this farm family did it successfully.

          Off topic. Sorry Tom.

Agree with mbrat, if it makes good bread it should be number 1. Less HVK has less ash which actually makes better bread then high HVK yet we get less for it. And the flower requires less bleaching.

I guess that is why most millers in Canada use #3 to make better bread flour for less money. Or so i've heard.

This year is really proving the games have to end or change to reflect the next century. Yes were 10 years into it but man they have to change or the sentiment will get even stronger and then it will finally be over. CWB supporters should be looking for change this year also. It isn't working the way were doing things.

Let me guess SF3 the change your hoping they will be looking for, is to sell to YOU. 1/4 at a time. :-)

I agree after this year everyone will be looking at all things differently. It will be interesting to watch how it works out. And it will.

Producers are afraid to haul #1 until they have a deal on lower grades. This is a symptom of a flawed system.
Other Markets would have simply paid up to get the product and moved on.

The cwb makes a call prior to the end of the previous crop year LOOKING for durum. They had the sales, they had people hauling durum in and they cut everyone off. Now they can't fill a boat because they were not even bright enough to ask/tell/beg the federal government to make the initial price higher than the off board market.

So husky and terra grain are making ethanol out of 1 & 2 AD.

                    Absolutely moronic.

The papers all through spring told the story of not being able to get a crop in the ground because it was too WET.

DURUM IS DESERT CROP!!!!!! It thrives in the heat and dry because of its long growing season. The so called farmer run board really lent their expertise to the situation this year, didn't they??

****ing morons and too bad if offended someone, suck it up. I have to suck up one huge loss on durum from the past 2 years that should have made me a shitload of money.

And yes, I have talked to some of the directors. Some won't/don't have the balls to return calls.

Oberg said "...this is the system we have and it works pretty well and the durum price is better this than last."

Here's the challenge OBERG - prove it.

The initial price even with the increase is still lower than last years.

And by the way where is some interims on last years durum that had the best quality in a decade. You know the stuff the cwb said they had a years supply.

And they are doing the same thing with CWRS. Maybe so they can blend off the fusarium problem. You know - where they bumped the grade for fusarium feed wheat but others with a good #3 get a feed.
