    World: Experts sure of negative S/D balance, replacements by lower quality barley inevitable
    The export surplus of malting barley in 2010/11 will be 1.6 mln tonnes from Australia, small quantities from Mercosur and Canada, a very questionable 1 mln tonnes from the EU, experts said in an industry report at the beginning of November.

    Import needs are 1.8 – 2.0 mln tonnes in China, 500,000 tons malting and food barley in other Asia, 300 – 500,000 tons in Russia, 450,000 tons in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, 100,000 tons in Turkey and the Mediterranean, 50,000 tons in South Africa, it is estimated.

    The supply and demand balance is negative and experts forecast replacements by lower quality barley.

    China: Malting barley crop to reach 1.2 mln tonnes, imports – 2.2 mln tonnes - forecast
    China’s barley crop estimates have stabilized, experts foresee receivals of 1.2 mln metric tonnes of malting barley, an industry survey said earlier this month.

    The forecast crop by province is as follows: winter barley - 300,000 tonnes are expected to be produced in Jiangsu; spring barley - 150-180,000 tonnes are expected to be harvested in Xinjiang, 350,000 tonnes - in Gansu, 250-300,000 tonnes in Inner Mongolia and 50-70,000 tonnes in other provinces.

    The country’s beer output is expected to arrive at 410 mln hl in 2010. The malt input will remain low at 7 kilos/hl, therefore barley needs should be 3.6 mln tonnes, of which 2.4 mln from imports, experts forecast.

    However, carry-over stocks and a larger use of wheat and adjuncts are expected to reduce imports needs, which the Chinese put at 1.8 to 2.0 mln tonnes. Foreign experts, however, believe that China’s 2010 imports will reach 2.2 mln tonnes, the largest quantity since years.

    It remains to be seen, whether Canada can deliver any malting barley to China, otherwise Chinese maltsters and brewers must buy all their needs from Australia, France and Denmark.

      Sooooooooooo, it turns out that they don't need only the best of the best fer brewing. In rreality they kin use any old crappy binswipe that's laynn around to make beer. Most Comedian beer tastes like its been made out of binswipe anyways. So tell us somethin knew about malt. Methinks in future we should have to wait till moisture is down to say 8 - 9 %. That would give us Comedians a distinky advantage over the rest of the world. After all, you can't replace quality, er kin ya? Nuf said, what a pile of industry crap!

        We had 47 lbs. bly that was rejected last yr...They scooped it up this yr and Prairie Malt took it already...

          In some countries they make beer outta cow's milk. Guess in reality they kin use anythin to brew brew! Not just high quality, plump, diease free, unchitted, no mold, light colored, hi germ, happy kernels of a pure select variety. Malt industry smalt industry, phoney baloney beer. Try somea our microbrewed beaver tail beer. Ya man it tastes like beaver tails too, really truly unique ugh and ta think it fechetas a premium price.....

            Would advice you to actually listen at some of the meetings you attend. Some pretty interesting things happening on the micro brewery. They are a different set of customers for maltsters with special requirements and higher prices right up the supply chain. I know it would confuse you but the signals from the opportunities don't get through the CWB initial payment system.

            On your comments on meetings, I enjoy my contact with farmers and their novel solutions to everyday problems. Successfull farmers are identifying market needs/niches and organizing business to capture the benefit (including price) of these opportunities.
