    Malt barley

As we anxiously await the new crop report, I was wondering how harvest conditions in Australia have affected their malt barley production. One can only guess that any in the west came off dry but with high protein and slightly lower yields. Any comments on whether the heavy rains in the east will reduce Australia,s exports of malt? Mallee anyone?

New report out today saying 50 percent of Australia's wheat will be feed, Its not going to bode well for malt. The only thing that saved the little bit of Malt that made it in Canada this fall was the fact that it was so cold in Sept and that reduced the mold and chitting a bit. Though a lot did chitt.
Had to check but according to a 2005 study I found Aus barleys have lower dormancy levels than European and thusly will likely chitt (sprout) real bad during this event.

Botom line is barley sprouts easier than wheat if 50 percent of the wheat is feed extrapolate from there. It ain't going to be pretty.
