seeding plans 2011

Any one have their seeding plans for 2011 figured out yet?

We have a few months to think about it and I will have a better idea after the crop production show in Saskatoon.

So far what I am planning,

Summer follow 25 percent or less
Verona Durum 30 percent
Red lentils 25 percent
Large Green lentils 10 percent
Canola and canary seed 5 percent
Sundre feed barley 5 percent


How much less do you think Polish Canola would yield compared to an Invigor 5440 variety in South West Sask?

I am thinking of growing some Polish Canola for pedigreed seed production.

Polish will yield way way less. Way less.
Here is ours if we can seed.
half canola have acres that were not seeded last year and half or 4500
the other is oats and I believe white wheat from pioneer.
thats 2000 and 2500.

About the Polish Canola. If you had to say a percentage less what would think.

I farm in the heart of the canola region. The very best we could ever get was 25 bu/acre under ideal conditions. Absolutely horrible compared to todays top yielding invigors.

True Polish yield way less about 1/2 than RR canola but maturity date is 87 days as compare to RR canola 100 days or more. I have found source who has Polish canola but problem is which retailer has chemical for this Polish. I rather get #1 than either sample or #3 or #2 canola and yield didn't consider to me. In past I used Polish and love it and thinking want go back again depend if can get chemical for this Polish. These canola can seed as late as June 1 and still get harvest by end of August, that beauty. I haven't book yet but first to find source of chemical. Heard that Invigor seed is sold out in Viterra.

I don't think under dry conditions
polish will yield as little vs arg. as
some guys are saying. Also, the last
time guys around here grew polish, we
weren't putting on the food to feed the
crop for high yields. I was thinking of
getting some if we get late again, for
the unseeded land. A tolerant variety
would be a massive breakthrough. I would
grow a quarter a year just to get a
field I could seed winter wheat on, as
up here it is rare to get a crop off in
time. Polish would give us that option.

I think polish has the bad rap from
historic treatment of canola. IE. on
summerfallow, seeded later, and with no
big feeding program like we do now. I
know I sure want to try some out.

Average RoundUp Canola here is mid to
high 40's, best field average was 68
bushels in 2008 (ideal conditions).
When I grew polish (Reward) average
yields were mid 20's, best field ever
was 34.
Definately not the same fertility as now
though. Probably 50% higher fertility,
earlier seeding, better weed control.

I have read a few times that there is
work being done on new polish varieties
and they should be commercially
available in 2011.
An average Polish crop of 25 bushels @
$12/bushel is 300/acre gross. Way
better than unseeded acres. And if its
a wet year and you are fighting (mudding
in) to seed a crop in June Canola should
hopefully beat $12/bushel.
If you were unseeded in 2010 I would
look for Polish seed (its gonna be
wetter this spring than last isn't it?
Anything that got worked black can you
mount a valmar on a harrow bar and
scratch the seed in? Get anything
growing to dry it out. If you didn't
have snow cover would broadcasting 5 lbs
open pollinated roundup canola now
germinate in the spring (maybe blend it
with 10 lbs bin run to get a better
cover)

Did you's use daddys credit card and buy dose utter acres? Why don't you's try some flax? what it yield out dare? Says $16 x 30 bushel = $480 per acre. I wood seed da whole ranch to flax. Try it, Try it. If'n it werks you's will look like Real Genies......

If I grow Polish Canola it will be for Pedigreed seed production. It is a new variety and the price I will sell it for will be quite a bit higher than the market value of Canola. Over $20bu.

Can't do anything to Control wild mustard for weed control. Will not be good for pedigreed seed if there is Wild Mustard in the Canalo seed.

Cotton will see if we sf in the spring. I know there is enough moisture in 2011 but would like to have some sf for 2012 in SW Sask things can dry up very fast.

Best we ever ever got from Polish was 28 and that was a fluke on a few quarters back in late 70s.
Difference between a liberty 5440 and a polish will be huge. But if it turns dry in your area for weeks on end the polish may surprise you and be very close to the hybrids.
