Whether its the top, or not, somebody better tell me they are actively selling canola at this price. I went to the local elevator on Monday. I thought I would start on a positive note, saying canola prices are high and its good news. I had one guy proceed to tell me how this price was reached in 1973 and if I were to calculate the cost of inflation that really it was actually a rather moderate price and he was not selling yet. I do not know enough about 1973 I was 3 years old, but I do know in the past 18 years I have been farming I do not recall canola over $10.00/bushel, I supposed it was, I just dont recall. Now, $13.00/ bushel, somebody please, sell something.

I priced some HEAR for 14.40 yesterday with bunge. It has a 15 bushel A of G, this is the only stuff I dare price under these wet conditions. I simply HAVE TO GET IT IN THE GROUND. But I am hopeful we can seed, why I don't know, its freaking wet, but 14.40 will give a guy some optimism.
Hey hobby guy, I was -3 in 1973. I have put in 18 crops as well, and have seen 10 plus a few times, but not a lot.

Only 7 years history but a monthly chart to review. Prices at or above $13/bu much of first half 2008.
$470 ish futures equals about $10. $600 to about $13. $690 $15 ish. Use a $30 basis.

My plan is sell more canola when I deliver my currently priced canola this week. According to monthly chart show upside potential and held there for a bit. But Canola can heat so why hold unless under perfect storage, I am concerned about mine I want it all to leave before spring.
Gold, silver, oil, copper all under pressure today. TSX only down just over 1 percent. Dollar under par first time in 2 weeks. China trying to slow economy but growth still going nuts. Demand should stay strong. Huge boxes of under the table money still everywhere. Younger generation is learning how to spend their parents money. Hopefully this is just the blip before another shot up. Buying opportunity?

hobbyfrmr, as I recall in 73 or 74 canola net to farmer got to mid $9, but never reached $10. The neighbor waiting for $10, then rode it down to $6 on storage in UGG. In 83, I think, canola did touch $16 but all was sold by that time, few had any to sell. We got $13 for 150 bu, cleaning up bins. Too bad we have little to price, huge difference in farm incomes after last crop depending on crop results. And for 2011 crop, too scary.

Salmon supper was delicoius.
Hedgehog, in 2007 I got some canola dropped on by plane. It was a good emergence, I harrowed it after seeding, and the plant stand was fantastic. But, with no seed placed blend, no N on one field due to saturation, The field I got the n on went near 20 an acre. The other about 12. It was just too wet. This past year it was wetter, harrowing was impossible, and so I don't think it would have worked well. I mentioned in another post that if i had known how conditions would have stayed, I would have farmed for crop insurance, and dropped some seeds on the ground, and then just sprayed it to keep it clean. I would have at least had crop insurance coverage for a 35 or so bushel crop, and would have been much better than it turned out. AHHH hindsight.
So from what I have seen, if you use a plane, conditions have to be right to harrow it in, and then get emergence, and then dry up, but not having pk on the crop would still harm the yield regardless. i thought some jumpstart would offset some p needs, but I hope i never have to worry about it again. This spring is shaping up in a disasterous way, however, and I sure hope we get a crop. Or I AM done, along with many others. Alot of auction sales would occur, and cheap land. Someone would luck out and get this cheap land, and then we'd get back into our former "sure crop area" trend of the previous 100 years. Oh well.

so if you spread some saved seed on by plane, if its really wet, it should germinate, then collect the insurance?
or can you put N on the frozen soil?
i dont want to try teach my granny to suck eggs, just thinking aloud.
i find my tractors go better on swamps without duals, they make ruts, but keep going, easier pulled out when stuck.
