As a long time Lentil grower I will be putting in my ussual rotation of Lentils. I know many guys tried Lentils for the first time this year and had mixed results. Will acres be reduced by better economics for more stable cropping options in the fringe areas? Have Red Lentil acres peaked? (for now) What is your experience and what are you seeing on your Farm?

Lentil Acres on our farm will be down.
Rotations have been pushed very hard and prices seem to be down, relatively speaking. We will still have a bunch in just less than the last few years. Good seed seems to be very hard to find.
Canola can now be locked in for $12.00 bu.
SWS 6
barley 6 .....
Dark horses
Peas, mustard, Durum there's none left and who has any clue what it will be worth 18 months from now.

im guessing 3 million acres seeded. There will be a
small decrease in acres. I am seeding lentils on any
ground that it can be seeded on once accounting for
rotation and disease concerns. I am not diving into
more cwb grains because of poor delivery and lack of
confidence in the cwb market ability. Lentils are the
crop that has made many farmers the money over the
last 10 yrs. There is a demand story for lentils that will
support prices for years to come. Open market, good
agronomics, early harvest

Joey, I agree with your reasons on why growing lentils are a great idea. The thing is your qualifying statement about rotations.
Any acre that is suitable for lentils with no rotation restrictions will be planted.
Thing is around here those acres have already had lentils on them two of the last three years.
As mbatrude stated in his opening thread lots of folks who had forgotten why they don't grow lentils were reminded last year.
No more than 2.5 million acres. 80% reds

I think the durum/lentil/durum/lentil rotation is the
new norm in the south west. The extreme lentil on
lentil will be a rare occurance next year.
I think out of the 3 mil ac, 70% red and 30% green.

Folks,
At Farmtech, Drew said another cool wet year in 2011 with la nina continuing into the summer.
Drew had 1950's charts that show La Nina can continue for years especially when we are at the low ebb of solar activity.
I am NOT growing lentils to end up with feed.

Glad to hear lentil acres will be down. More demand for lentil acres from traditional growing areas will result in strong prices hopefully once again. Chickpeas, IMO, will also be down. Two most profitable crops on our farm in the southwest, no exceptions.

I think with stronger prices for all commodities a better balanced rotation will be in the cards. The problem was last year all cereals were absolutely dissmal for 2010 fall that 'anything but' was the option - canola on canola, and lentils grown way north of hwy 16. Strange though, some of the best lentils came from the far North West Sask area. Our acres will be eliminated this year due to Drews forecast. I Frickin hate dealing with off grade lentils that I spent a fortune on fungicide.
