Alberta intends to build some massive new power transmission lines. Alberta ratepayers will pay the full price ($16 Billion) of these lines, even though the two line companies will be the sole owners of these lines.
The IPCC (industrial users) have said the increased cost of power in Alberta will drive businesses out of the province, with food processors and packing plants being the most vulnerable.
Many are citing a tripling of prices for electricity, although no one can really know until the final bills are in as the construction is a cost/plus deal!
I wonder how much more this deal might add to a farmers costs? Home/shop/aeration etc. as well as things like higher elevation charges, higher trucking costs if processors leave, etc.?
Will higher electricity costs make Alberta unattractive for any new value added industries like ethanol and bio deisel, milling, brewing, etc.? With the new CWB decisions coming...will Alberta be left out of some of the real advantages that might be possible?
What happens if the Packing industry collapses due to uncompetitive power costs....do feedlots scale back or close...does the remaining hog industry pack it in?
If that scenario takes place where do we sell poorer grains that have been damaged by drought or frost?
