winter wheat

We seeded 70% but now we are done.So thinking of winter wheat on the remaining acres.Does anyone know of a variety they would recommend for the milling market.Maybe some of these grain companies will be lining up sales for next August.

We grow radiant. It is hardy as we are in northern AB... after a decade of growing it... the 'northern vigour' has never been better!

Our crops look fabulous... seeded the end of Sept 10.

Last year most of the winter wheat was burnt around here due to the high fusarium. This year could be a repeat with a very dense stand in the few stands that were seeded last fall.Very poor resistance if you are in a fusarium area. The problem seems to be getting worse with winter wheat. The miracle 100 bus yields of a few years ago have evaporated into a nightmare. Just a warning to do your homework.

When you seed winter wheat how early can you seed it. Just wondering if it will work on some of the un-seeded acres in our area. If we are going to seed a cover crop anyway maybe winter wheat would be a good option.

Can it take a bit of water in the spring. Do you plan on seeding it on well drained land.

'A bit of water' isn't a foot deep then remaining under water for 3 weeks.

Melt water on frozen ground hasn't been a problem for us... but pot holes that take weeks to dry up after the ground thaws will kill the winter wheat.

If big heavy rains in the summer... the amount lost seldom is more than what would be flooded out then in any event. But if easy rains come.... spring wheat will survive where winter wheat dies in the spring.

Tom.....how early can you start to seed. Is August 1 too early.

Dont seed till august 15 or it will get too big and will use too much fertilizer. It can winterkill if it gets too large and wont go dormant.

I would agree with BW... 15-20th is plenty early.... 25-30th more ideal.

If 15 of Aug to 15 of Sept... I would only put 25lb act. N and PK at seeding. We then top dress in the early spring with 21, 34, or stabilised 46.

Dr. Ross McKenzie, Alberta Ag has done some recent work that indicates seeding in the last half of Sept could include all the N with the crop... if properly placed. We like the risk management opportunities of waiting till spring and top dressing the second stage of N then in winter wheat crop.
