THE Conservative policy on ending the CWB 'single buying desk' and the support for supply management was established by grassroots Conservatives at the first AGM in Montreal.

Pure and simple grass roots Democracy at work. Had you been there (In Montreal)... or even read the Conservative Party of Canada policy avaliable for anyone to see on the internet... you would know this is not a PM Harper or Minister Ritz or CWB Secretary Anderson's decision.

You had every opportunity to join the Conserative Party of Canada... and put forward a suggestion to change this policy. I did not see you in Ottawa 2 weeks ago... there is overall very GOOD support in our membership for both of these; support for supply management and CWB voluntary marketing policies.

Your twist on this is that the Conservative government is about to take this protection away, and that is bad as it is a double standard. I don't see it as bad for my bank balance. I'd suggest that by doing so it would help to take some farmers off government assistance, or as you have indicated "some inadequate safety nets".

And you're hung up on "How is that a fair policy for farmers?" Yipes!

Bucket - you nailed the simplist point of all on supply management. That and the fact that it is almost impossible to manage grain supply due to weather. Simpltons just don't get it at all.

I am surprised by all the Cons who support government intervention in the agricultural marketplace. Grassroots driven or not. We can just as easily let American dairy farmers and poultry producers supply our market at a lower cost.

What is wrong with letting the market decide who is the lowest cost producer? Obviously those who support supply management and ending the CWB monopoly are inconsistent in their philosophy and arguments. Must be uncomfortable trying to defend supply management while spouting free market ideology about the CWB.

We all know the only reason the Cons support supply mangement is for political reasons. So if you truly believe in a freemarket then don't bother trying to defend supply mangement because you are wasting your time.

Bucket, your arguments about food safety and the limited shelf life of dairy products being the reason why supply management is not on the table is quite funny. How then do they address the food safety issue in the US without supply management? Better find a better argument than that!

With Canada being a smaller population and the distance from these facilties, it seems to make sense.

In a joint release June 07/11 they applaud support for Supply Management in Speech from the Throne June 03/11.

I doubt that they all are Cons. Further, it is not my business to say that these farm sectors are wrong considering I'm not part of their organizations.

I do have skin in the growing of cereals, and it is my duty to ask the Conservative government to intervene in an agricultural marketplace that I consider to be rotten to the core with their "special status", and "special deals" for select farmers. You know, perhaps people like you. What's your angle?
