Oh the irony!!! About almost 20 years ago, the
Western Barley Growers made a very political
presentation to the Senate Ag Committee in Calgary
regarding the CWB monopoly. Sen Eugene Whelan
asked a very straight forward question. How many
members do you represent across the Prairies? They
responded "a little over a hundred". They were
dissed right then and there. Presto, the ABC was
formed with their wonky refundable check-off. Oh
yes, they spent years and millions of dollars on
"vexatious and frivolous" court challenges. And in
between, they threw out a few hundred grand here
and there on research. Most of the money was
spent on wining and dining and trips all over the
    place.
Now the irony. The only effective check-off funds
ABC ever collected were from sales of Board grains
    - feed and malt. I never discovered one single off
Board buyer, be it a grain company, feedlot or farm
to farm who collected the check-off. If it weren't for
the CWB collecting the check-off, could they ever
have gone to court? It'll be interesting to see if they
survive after August 2012, assuming this drama
unfolds as it is being talked about.

Just curious what court challenges the ABC has participated in? I can
only think of one and that was a long time ago (charter of rights
      challenge).

How many barley dollars have been transferred to the CWB
contingency fund to prop up the producer payment options losses
over the past 5 years? In a world where 49 % of western Canadian
permit book holders who received the survey in August voted for an
open market, how many dollars will be transfered from the barley
pricing pools/profits taken from cash trading to pay for the current
      publicity war?

From the 2011 CWB producer survey, 66 % of Alberta permit book holders surveyed supported an open market for barley.

Can these farmers ask for their money back?

Your statement cannot be proven correct by the fact the vast majority of production bought by these dealers is non-board barley.

Perhaps an appology is in order... Rockpile.

And other feed lots not in that list.

From the ABC website 40 cents of every dollar goes to research.

For what it is worth, the charter challenge occurred over 10 years ago. Alway interesting to see how long peoples memories are. For some it just seems like yesterday I guess.

ABC has done a lot to increase levy collection starting at getting more feedlots/feed mills on board. The way they do this is to show value to stakeholders.

IF'N the cwb meets its demise, then there
will be no need fer the AB Barely
                  Commission either. IT"LL have
accomplished its goal, and that of the AB
gobermont. This org is currently HEADLESS
                  at the momment anyway.........

                    Burbert

Hate to disagree but the need to invest in barley research remains to
stem the decline in barley acres in western Canada. Barley is important
for Alberta's livestock industry in general and cattle in particular. It is
also important for the malt industry. Work has to continue to improve
barley's profitability and competitiveness relative to other crops or acres
                    will continue to decline.

How Western Grain Research Foundation continues to be funded is a
concern. Likely will follow the ABC model including expanding to
collecting levies on the domestic feed market. Lots of discussion in other
                    threads.

But I guess you will agree that any organization has to survive on its
business merits as indicated by stakeholders willingness to invest/use
                    its services.

                      Burbert,

Opportunity expands exponentially to increase productivity and profitability as we remove the export restrictions on Barley. I state the obvious. We need better new barley varieties and productivity. Healthy food is key to feeding a hungry world... Barley is a very healthy food ingredient... often times better for us than wheat!

ABC has been working on this solution since its inception... and has just nipped the surface of solutions to reduce health care costs and increase life expectancy of our civilisation!
