My neighbours were after me to run for a vacant position on RM council. The above discussion makes me glad I said no. It's a thankless job!

A lot of the problem with municipal councillors is
the loath and envy mentality. They hate farmers
who are progressive. Some coucillors go on for
years using their position as a sword. In short
they are bullies and your taxes pay them to bully
      you.

Crazy system, you would think that the other
councillors would stand up against these arses
and say enough is enpugh. Spineless froot- loops

I agree its a thankless job. No one wants to do it anymore so these guys can run rampant. But I got a plan.

No one will mention the "thankless" job more quickly than a council member. Thats partly due to the piss poor job that many (but not all) are doing. But responsibility still ultimately falls back on the ratepayers and electorate's apathy; lack of involvement and unwillingness to stand up for everyone else. Change can be difficult or impossible with the limited tools avvailable in rural politics. And unforunately there are only a handful who can see the big pictures which is certainly much larger than self interests. Just how many know that the Sask rural municipal elections created 3 year terms for the "incumbants" And how may know that 4 year terms will be the norm thereafter. Few care and thats why semi dictators can take control with so little effort. The bad ones do a lot more harm than their expenses and per diems amount too. Ever notice how the persons who have the public's overall interest at heart don't often last long amongst the old guard? Self perpetuating system. Changes very difficult to achieve.... a lot like getting rid of you know what.

You hit the nail on the head. The ones that want to run a RM like a business and have a plan get rail roaded out by council. Private meetings etc. stir the pot and surprise guess what one gets a useless councilor for years. Give some smidgen of power to these guys and they think their GOD.
But here is some late news the Little bugger was ditching all week major sloughs into a creek. 5 ft to 6ft deep trenches just cut with track hoe. Only problem he doesn't realize a major creek is blocked by beavers on a grid road and will get flooded this weekend. IT's his division. But he will also cause a livestock facility to be flooded. AH can you say lawsuit. Might send a donation to just help out.

there are two sides to most stories and every RM has an asshole who thinks the rules apply to everyone but him

SF3, if watershed or saskwater are coming out, make sure you go with them and dont rely on a report from council. Sounds like your dipper councillor will have some machinery around next week to make some repairs in the area

As I told Premier Brad W last week "The biggest thing holding back Sask is rural municipal politics." There are a couple hundred fifedoms in this province; all going in their own directions. The provincial government is fully aware that this just didn't work this last spring with all the flodding and water problems. Something reaally has to be done on this issue and it sounds like even Brad and co. realize that it is indeed a big problem. And the best minds aren't even or ever considering serving on rural councils. Talk about designing and preparing for the future. Again it sounds like that other organization that is heading for a drastic restructuring. There comes a time when something just has to be done; and all will be better off except those who value their few thousand dollar job , their entitlements and wish to use their position of power over their neighbors.

I think the RM debate has to take place. It's not
working and actually causing road blocks to
                      prosperity.

From the outside looking in, Sask should have
1/3 as many RM's as there are today. Very
expensive to run that many councils. Less
personal bias if each RM was larger.

Also much easier for oil companies, etc to deal
                        with.

2/3 less to create a county system.
