Winnipeg - October 7, 2011 - Alliance Grain Traders Inc.
plans to invest up to C$50 million towards the construction of a
pasta and pulse processing as well as logistics complex in
Regina, Saskatchewan, a release from the company said Friday.
The project is expected to commence construction in 2012.
The announcement by Alliance was attended by Prime Minister
Stephen Harper, Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, Brad Wall,
Premier of Saskatchewan and Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco.
The complex is planned as a milling site for wheat and pulses
processing durum wheat into semolina for the production of the
Arbella pasta brand in Canada, as well as pulse processing
capacity for production of ingredient pulse flours, proteins,
starches and fibres.
The distribution centre is expected to capitalize on the
availability of ocean containers, trucks and intermodal units at
the site for domestic and export shipments.
"We are continuing our growth and expansion strategy of our
global packaged food and ingredients platforms in pulses and
milled durum wheat," Murad Al-Katib, President and CEO of
Alliance Grain Traders Inc., said.
He said Canada is a dominant world supplier of durum wheat
and pulses and with his company's strong Canadian base built over
the past decade, Western Canada was a logical choice for the new
processing complex.
"We have built a successful global pasta business based out
of our production facilities in Turkey. With the good conditions
in Canada, we feel that significant opportunities exist to expand
our operations here. Our relationships with growers in Western
Canada and our relationships with our international customers we
sell to everyday create opportunities and synergies that we feel
may be realized through this investment," he said.
Alliance Grain Traders Inc. is a pulse, staple food and
ingredient processor and exporter engaged in the business of
value-added processing (cleaning, splitting, sorting and bagging)
of pulses and specialty crops for export and domestic markets.
Through its offices and processing facilities located in some of
the pulse growing regions in Canada, the US, Turkey, China and
Australia and merchandising and sales offices in the UK, the
Netherlands and Spain, AGT handles a full range of pulses and
specialty crops including lentils, peas, chickpeas, beans and
canary seed.
Through its subsidiaries in Turkey, the Arbel Group, AGT also
produces staple foods such as Arbella Pasta, rice, and milled
wheat products, including bulgur and semolina."

Someone else asked the question about markets and development.

This plant was planned as an expansion of one of their other plants. With this policy change in western Canada it allows Alliance to build on existing relationships , with farmers and buyers.

Already have the brands developed, shelf space bought.

If they don't offer a price/delivery better than you can get elsewhere don't deliver.

Funny that's what the monopoly supporters did'nt get.

We have no competitive advantage,labour
cost,currency cost,land cost,.

We take fish out of lake winnipeg,ship it to
china,where it is processed then shipped back to us
at a profit.

Re-read that and think about that,then think about
how great everybody thought nortel was-this is not
a no brainer-and how it effects the international
price of durum needs to be explained to me,the
only bonus is a savings in shipping costs,unless we
are special and they descide to pay us a higher
price,which in turn makes them certifiably retarded
by making the company even less competitive

I really don't see why this should offend you... it is a very simple statement of 'fact' (in my small mind) and appreciation for the commitment and hard work Alliance has done.
