    Ergot programs

Lots of ergot in the wheat here, some of mine is 0.1% but the wheat is CWRS 1. Local viterra is offering $25 off number 1 price and is going off to color sorter in sakatoon.

Are there any other programs out there anyone is aware of?

Ask the cwb, its their grain. Good luck with that. If you had fusarium and your kid worked at the cwb the problem would be solved already.

Durum is going over a gravity table. #5 to #3 with
      about 10% loss.

Does anyone buy ergot for fuel pelloting or some
      similar purpose?

        WD9,

We got word yesterday ATL is installing a sorter in Edmonton. 5/t under your quote... Jan/12 it is supposed to be up running.

This new technology will really change the way grades are done!

Not sure where you are but check with WIT in Weyburn. They have a program.

Its not a CWB problem. Its a matter of if your local elevator has cleaners that will take it out.

Not a cleaning program, they take the wheat, take off dockage, $25, and i never see any of it again.

Viterra in MJ has some sort of a $15.00T On Durum run it over a colour sorter.
Freight is approx $5.00T better than Davidson

Grade is going from a 5 to 2

Bonus you get to watch the snowbirds practice

              double bonus it's in Saskatchewan

Most of you know that you have been paying for cleaning, when in most years its not required for the international contracts. Ergot is a cleanable problem. The cwb should be standing up for farmers on the ergot problem just like the fusarium program. If it is cleaned out its considered dockage. 15 bucks a tonne for .03 dockage seems a little high, no???

The trouble is that the screenings you are left with are virtually worthless.

Extremely hard to believe that ergot is only a problem
on about 20% of the wheat crop. Maybe the board is
happy because for many it's cheaper to down grade
than incur cleaning costs. There is likely a shortage of
lower grades (3's)to meet market demand.

The current asking price of cwfeed in thunder bay is 344 per tonne. 1cwrs 11 protein is 350 per tonne. (Source: cwb.)

So yes they can downgrade, sell it for feed, and make big bucks. They spread on the initial is more than the asking.

Maybe the issue is with the Grain Grading Guide.

Grain is graded (or should be) on a clean sample after dockage removed.

Not all ergot is removed with normal cleaning however gravity tables have been around and used for years and more recently color sorters.

I wonder if we couldn't upgrade the guide to include this modern equipment and practices in 'cleaning for grade improvement' section. That way anything taken out would be dockage instead of grading factor.

Tom4 mentioned 15% of the wheat came off with colour sorter. The dockage is can't be fed but burnt. So which is a bigger hit, 25$ off the price or 15% dockage?

500 bucks a tonne value. That is 75$ a tonne loss on dockage value plus hauling it. A much higher hit.

                              Do I have this right?

Say you haul 10t at 1.5% dockage.
It is graded 5cwad acc't ergot.
Over a color sorter/gravity table they take out another 15% but it is now graded a 2 cwad.

Are you then paid 2cwad on 10t -1.5% -15% = 8.375t? Plus charged $25t for running over color sorter OR 2cwad on 10t - 1.5% plus charged $25 and grain company looses the 15% taken out by (cleaning for grade improvement)?
