Western Grain and Western Grain Cleaning bought by Toepfer!

Alfred C. Toepfer International Acquires Canadian Specialty Crop Businesses

Global commodity merchandiser Alfred C. Toepfer International, G.m.b.H. announced today that it has acquired two Canadian companies, Western Grain Trade Ltd. and Western Grain Cleaning & Processing Ltd. They are Saskatchewan-based processors and exporters of peas, lentils, mustards, flaxseed and various special crops. The operations of these companies will form the new Western Grain and Processing division within Toepfer.

Lawrence Yakielashek, president of Toepfer Canada, said, “These acquisitions have a strong sales presence in South America, Middle East, China, South Asia, India and Turkey which complements our existing business in these regions. Their origination and processing teams are focused on quality which is essential to processing and gives customers confidence and peace of mind.”

Gary Towne, management chairman of Toepfer, remarked, “As new markets emerge, so do new opportunities, while globalization is affecting the world agricultural trade more and more. This makes the business more complex and demanding. Knowledge of these new markets and logistics, flexibility, a strong capital base, outstanding well-trained employees and the right connections are more important than ever. We believe adding processing to Toepfer is vital to ensuring that we continue to offer customers products to meet their growing demands. We also feel very strongly about bringing new market opportunities to farmers.”

Included in the acquisition are two processing facilities near North Battleford, Saskatchewan, that operate three processing lines. The facilities have the capability to load railcars—in bulk or with various sized bags or totes—as well as container stuffing for trucks. The 10 employees at the two plants and origination office near North Battleford will become Toepfer employees. In addition, nine people in the sales and logistics office located in the city of Saskatoon will become Toepfer employees and will continue to serve their customers in English, Spanish, Mandarin and Vietnamese.

Heidi Dutton, former general manager of Western Grain said, “We are all excited to join the Toepfer family and look forward to working with our existing clients and also the new ones through the Toepfer’s global offices to expand opportunities from producers to end users."

Since the foundation in 1919, Alfred C. Toepfer has been active in trading grain, oilseeds and feedstuffs. Today, the worldwide organization of Toepfer International consists of the headquarters in Hamburg, and 38 branches all over the world. Toepfer International, founded in 1979 has more than 2,000 employees achieve a sales volume of more than 42 million tons annually. Learn more at www.acti.de.
