Flat demand and a tight supply situation is keeping the canary seed market in a very tight trading range right now. According to an official at the Canaryseed Development Commission of Canada, the market should be a lot higher right now due to the tight supply numbers printed by Stats Canada which show total supply below the five year range of 152,000 – 204,000 mt. Prices have held steady around the CAD$0.26-$0.27/lb range. Prices may see a boost should Mexico, who usually imports 25% of Western Canadian Canaryseed, lift the tight restrictions imposed in August on weed seed tolerance. Canada is the world’s largest producer and export of canary seed.
