    Canola on lentil stubble?

Last year we had Canola on Lentil stubble that
was sprayed with .33 rate pursuit but we also
had over 20 inches of rain that year.
Last year we had less than 8 inches.

Jag we seed canola on pea ground for years and its sprayed with 1/3 rate pursuit.
Now were Black soil and organic matter is 6 plus.
      Never had a problem.
Canola likes the warm ground and pulses do something to the ground that canola really likes.

        Jag,

If you want to be on the safe side... plant Smart Canola.

We did have headland damage on our Canola on Lentil ground this spring.

If it is a cool dry spring... the non-smart Canola really takes a hit to start out... a 20 percent loss is not to be unexpected...

What's your pH, Pursuit breakdown is more related to pH than moisture unlike most other group 2's. The higher the better.

Should be around a PH 8 or higher, I suspect on your schvclay land Jag?

look for mustard or stinkweed in the spring. (usually germinate early) If they are growing you are good to go.

We farm in wc sask and have been doing this for years.

Pursuit can thin the crop initially but I have found not much of a yield difference.

This year was a good example the canola seeded on durum stubble definitely
looked better all year but only .5 to 1 bushel yield difference.

The thin spots are on headlands or around those darn tree rows where there was a
                  chance for overlap.

We like to seed our canola first and the first ground to dry out is lentil ground.

It is often quite dry by the time we seed our cereals, which we seed last.

Generally our season is drier from early to mid july on so disease is not an issue.

I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND NO CLEARFIELD CANOLA IF YOU INTEND TO GROW
LENTILS ON THAT GROUND IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS. YOU CANNOT CONTROL
                  CLEARFIELD CANOLA VOLUNTEERS IN LENTILS.

We have a three year rotation lentil-canola-durum rotation going which may move
to a lentil-durum-canola-durum on some ground depending on kochia
                  infestations. Good Luck.
