Any how to the topic at hand,
I have yet to hear from them yet. They had as of Dec. 15th not opened my information. For those of us who grew no crop for 3 out of 5 years, any payment will be a godsend. A big hole was dug in those years, and if the program is available I will try for it.
On the other hand, I am not a big believer in subsidies. I think they could weed out the non-necessary claims from the farm saving ones, due to unreal circumstances.
I know that may be hard for some on here to understand, who have had good fortune to grow decent crops in these years of record prices, but for some of us, it has been a nightmare, watching those three years, as guys from out of the wet areas complained about 20 inches of rain, while we had 40, and now talk that some of us who may need a hand up, due to unreal circumstances, should not get any assistance. We aren't all 50 years old with 10 good years in a row. we didn't all inherit land, or come into a well set up operation with free daddy labour, a wife that pulls in 60 g's a year, etc.
I hate subsidies, but in some instances where for a 6 year stretch, entire areas are wiped out from growing crops at record prices, I think if the program triggers, there are some who could sure as heck use any money that comes available. especially in areas that typically grow excellent crops, and contribute to those areas that usually grow less..
Just a few cents, no harm meant, but if I could get what I think I should receive, I will be grateful and it will help me catch up with at least 5% of what I have lost these last 6 or 7 years due to WAY too much rain. Not just a measly 20 inches!

Someone once talked about entitlement on this website.
Farming is an interesting business.
When we have the power to sell our product for a "set" margin above cost of production that allows for absolute self sustainability, then I will turn my nose up at subsidies. Totally impossible with all the variables in farming.
If it is so lucrative, buy a farm and have at it.

No - it works exactly like that in the supply
managed dairy sector. Maybe reflect on that
before trying to get rid of SM.

I don't like subsidies as they encourage people to keep the same behaviour, even if those actions aren't working or the decisions are bad. But for people who find themselves in Freewheat's postion some effective form of safetynet is needed. Sounds like I'm half pregnant right?
What really irks me about the suite of programs in the last decades is how a whole new service industry has sprung up to administer them. The "Farm Programs Delivery Industry" eats up so much of the program's budget in administration costs it's shocking. I think it's often more half. Sure there is lots of employment created, but when the adminstration industry gets a bigger share of the budget than farmers there's something wrong.
