From J in SK.: What future role can the CWB play and what should they do?

Why cannot the industry get together and decide if there is any elevators or terminals that could be sold to the CWB to even the playing field?

Kind of like was done during the Viterra takeover of Agricore-United.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just work out a handling
agreement with one or all of the companies? I'm
assuming that the CWB could throw a lot of
business in the direction of any grain company
that wants to handle the extra CWB business.
Grain companies do make their margins on
handling volume.

From the CWB's perspective, they (<i>we</i>)pay
higher elevation rates on board grains than non-
board now, why wouldn't they stay the same, or
even be negotiated down to the price offered by
the best grain company bidder?

Maybe if the crazy eight had taken a position of actually working
with the govt instead of the scorched earth policy that they took,
they would have something in place now to help the board survive in
the future. Namely getting a gov't regulated handling fee, similar
to the legislated freight rates. As a free-market supporter I would
have no problem with that. I would guess there would have to be an
oversight committee to guarantee the line companies give the board
timely deliveries etc... Not much different than what is in place
for rail transportation. But that would take a little foresight and
vision.

The fate of the CWB under the FULL control of the current government is pretty well sealed. It is DOOMED.

Johnson served as executive vice-president of operations for the former Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, CEO of Winnipeg-based Ag Pro Grain; CEO of FarmGro Organic Foods in Regina; and operations manager of Northern Sales in Winnipeg.

While having a knowledge of operations is important, question is: who is the visionary, who can he build a model that will succeed.

Hensall Coop in Ontario is an interesting model that combines shareholders from production to sales, seems to me someone from this board may be better suited to build a profitable functioning model.

Who would sell an elevator?

The UGG/Agricore sale to Viterra was intervened
by the federal Govt's competition bureau. Viterra
would have had 100% market share in certain
locations if they were allowed to own all of
Agricore's assets.

That is not the case in this scenario.

To J from SK: You don't have to own assets as long as you have access to them when you need them. What the CWB needs is to be on good terms with grain handlers and negotiate handling terms or perhaps swaps with them.
