Do you guys have any investments outside of the farm?

I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this.

I want to have a little rainy day money set aside outside of the farming operation.

It does not seem to make any return just having cash sitting in the bank.

I have been looking at Mutual Funds as a place to safely park some money and still have a chance at some equity growth.

    What do you guys do?

      Private equity financing.

You have to research the business you are involved in but there are great opportunities if you do the homework and are willing to take a chance.

Currently I have different investments earning 8.5% to as high as 18%.

I personally don't like mutual funds other than what money I have in RRSP's.

You don't need to have mutual funds as rrsp's,and
        yes most do suck.

Farmgal make sure your tfsa is maxed out.

The only thing worth buying is resource based/hard
        asset type things in canada.

The best low risk/high reward thing for conservative
types would be the cef fund of canada or possibly
        saskatchewan or alberta provincial bonds.

        IMHO NIA DYODD

in my humble opinion not investment advice do your
        own due diligence

If your in sask, the SPP fund has shown a decent return over the years with low risk. Something like 9% over ten. I also got in with a land investment company in Calgary about 10 years ago, and own shares in land just northwest of the city, this will be the best return by far, when they subdivide etc. I have a few mutual funds, but in last years farming disaster, I said heck with it, pulled them out and had to use them to survive! They were peforming at an astounding 1.5 per cent per year for ten years type of thing.

There are lots of optons out there, i look forward to the responses for my own use, and learning. O do know several guys on here are into stock trading, and perhaps day trading. I am not sure if anyone does commodity trading in a big way.

It depends what you want for risk, and for longevity of investment.

When I was a kid in the late 80's, I had two term deposits at the local CU from calf sales, at twelve per cent. Man that monet grew fast!

I have a couple condos in the city rented out thousand a month each. Very little maintainance. Pay condo fee and its all looked after. They also been appreciating in value. I will sell them when closer to retirement.

Hope those condos are not in vancouver.

I'm trying to find a way to short that market.

                Thanks for the ideas.

Wd, no she should not be taken for granted. Go
do something nice for her today.

I like the rental property idea, interest rates are
low and if we can buy right it will cashflow and
                build up equity.

Do you like any company stocks? Or do you
stay away from the stock market?

I trade on the stock market ( mostly can. stocks ) Set
up your own online trading account, start small to
learn and have fun with it. There is money to be be
made in the stock market. ( that's where your mutual
fund money is ) Also watch CNBC with jim cramer and
                  mad money.

Do not, I repeat, do not ever invest in
                    Canadian mutual funds. Management expense
ratios will eat all of the returns and
quite possibly the capital as well.
Typical MER's in Canada are around 2.5 to
2.8% which is a crime in today's low yield
                    economy.

                      Farmgal71,

Take a look at this one:

Medizone International Tightens Noose On Food-Borne Pathogens, Bed Bugs and MRSA

                      September 15, 2011

Following a string of laboratory trial successes with its flagship product, AsepticSureâ„¢, Medizone International has filed 3 international patent applications to protect its much-anticipated entry into the global food-processing, bed bugs and sports equipment markets.

San Francisco, CA September 15, 2011. Expanding on its already strong intellectual property protection program, Medizone International, Inc. (MZEI:OB MZEI:QB) has further strengthened its global position under the International Patent Cooperation Treaty. Three refined versions of its US Provisional Applications covering the bed bug, food processing and sports equipment markets, have now been filed.

Medizone's President and Director of Medical Affairs, Dr Michael E. Shannon stated, "The filing of our Insect Infestation Control application reflects a major step forward for Medizone in its insect control program, particularly in the area of bed bug infestation - a world-wide problem which, until now, has been extremely difficult if not impossible to deal with.

"What's most exciting about our recent work is that by modifying our AsepticSureâ„¢ protocol, we also destroy larvae and eggs with a single treatment.

"Like the highly resistant spores of bacteria such as C difficile and Bacillus Subtilis, bedbug eggs are very difficult to kill and are often deposited in hard to reach areas. But with our new AsepticSureâ„¢ protocol, nothing survives! Hotel and motel rooms, homes, theaters, to mention only a few problem areas, can now be rid of a bedbug infestation in a single treatment with the additional benefit of having any bacterial pathogen simultaneously eliminated"

I prefer to self direct my retirement, I started into RRSP, have the TFSA and will transfer the entire rrsp into the investment account sometime before I retire. Trick is to pay the least amount of tax when you retire. The RRSP is fully taxable. The investment account is taxed as a capital gain so will concentrate on buiding it. Lucked out lately with the Petrobacken stock up 61 percent in less than 2 months. My origional investment is also paying 1 percent per month in Div. Can't say that for every stock is not in the plus, must be willing to spend a little time, currently holding some cash in the account and waiting for the next purchase decision. I like the revenue property also. Best advice is your accountant and make up a retirement plan for yourself, what is going to happen to the farm? Give to kids, sell, what are the tax implications?

Daylate I really like Questrade for online trading. They
are low cost but give good service.
