NFU: Alberta Ag Meetings About Killing CWB and Whistling Past Graveyard.

    NFU Release

ALBERTA AG MEETINGS ABOUT KILLING CWB AND WHISTLING PAST GRAVEYARD

Rimbey, Alberta - Although the Government of Alberta is putting forth a celebratory mood regarding the end of the Canadian Wheat Board’s (CWB) single desk sales on August 1st 2012, its public meetings being held in January and early February across the province are taking place in an increasingly negative context for farmers who must deal with the fallout from the government’s long ideological campaign against the CWB.

While officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) have been telling farmers to consider futures contracts and other costly services advertised by the private trade, one of the largest futures trading companies in the world, MF Global, filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States, freezing over $2 billion of farmers’ money. At the same time Viterra, a large grain handling company, was issuing statements that it anticipated extra earnings between $40 and $50 million dollars a year, once the Wheat Board was gone – money that will come out of farmers’ pockets.

“When you consider the news that the opening of South Korea to beef sales is only anticipated to bring an extra $15 million a year, and much of that will end up in the pockets of the packing companies, the scale of the disaster caused by losing the CWB becomes very clear. The CWB earned prairie grain farmers a minimum of $500 million per year. There will be no way to replace that scale of proven economic benefit,” observed Jan Slomp, National Farmers Union Coordinator for Region 7 (Alberta).

“I was very upset to hear these ARD officials tell us that the introduction of genetically modified (GM) wheat is now just around the corner. They must have missed the memo from our customers that they will not buy GM wheat. I can only assume they see the profits on GM seed sales to farmers, as more important than the fact nobody wants to eat GM wheat. Farmers won’t be able to sell it, because no one wants it. Where is their respect for our customers? How is this good news for anybody but the agro-chemical companies?” asked NFU Executive member Doug Scott.

“Big grain and big rail companies have been trying hard for 25 years to bankrupt small grain players. This latest coup - the elimination of the CWB - could do it. Without the CWB doing sales and getting terminal space for producer cars, I don’t see how short line railways can continue to ship grain in producer cars,” continued Scott.

“For decades the Alberta government has financed a campaign to undermine the CWB. The bureaucrats at these meetings are failing to come up with anything remotely beneficial for farmers. It is now becoming clearer to farmers that the ‘freedom’ from the single desk comes with a loss of economic opportunities. Ironically these latest information meetings again illustrate the value of the CWB single desk,” said Slomp.

Why is it no one can remember the 250 million dollar discretionary trading loss the cwb racked up and took out of the pockets of farmers? With little to no insight as to who was responsible and a look at the report that was written by ex cwb employees.

The cwb never got western canadian farmers premiums and the current new crop pricing is indicating at the very least competetive pricing for off the combine delivery similar to that in the US.

So why has the cwb always held back money? At the current acceptance and call levels the cwb is at, the risk should be out of their sales program and the money should be flowing already.

If you held crop from 2011 and take the new crop price you will still be paid for your 2011 crop faster than going through the cwb. Seems odd in this day and age.

Well, well, reality finally sets in.
Freedom, comes with a cost, it appears!
The real problem is, that the open
market has very rarely made framers as
much money as the Wheatie bored.
      However, framers git there money
      quicker, which apparently motivates many
      youngn's. The chislers, marketeers and
crooks are circling the pool of foolish
      youngn's ***** considering selling there
product ta them usin brokers and
clipboreders, just like in the 30's.
You boys & girls are gonna be SORRY!!!
We have boycotted any Albertie Gag
meetings fer some time now, cousin theys
basically useless. Nothin more fun than
spendin a day in a room with a buncha
really dumb, framers anyway, when ya
coulda been ice fishin, which is WAY
      MORE FUNNER.........

Even if the price is the same in Canada and the US in an open market scenario, you are money ahead.

When the cwb holds your money they are paying you nothing for the use of it. They are technically using your credit card.

Getting full payment of 7.00 off the combine means more to most than getting 3.50 and waiting for shitass little payments throughout the year.

It also means you don't have to sell other crops to make up for what you can't deliver because of the cwb's call system.

You still have the option of using the cwb and I encourage you to use them.

It doesn't work for my farm.

Wow, janet used every scare monger phrase in the same article.

MF global stole farmers money (so that will happen), big bad viterra will make a nasty profit (farmers are too stupid to buy shares in profitable companies), packers will steal farmers money from access to south korea , 500 million benefit is a "fact", GM wheat is coming so hide the children, big rail and big grain are going to force us off the land so they can have it (farmers are still too stupid to invest in public companies that make money dealing with farmers), producer cars could only be booked through the cwb and they will not be available, short line rail companies will be bankrupt.

What else? There will be cats and dogs living together, floods, locusts, out of control stds, ...

Has anybody ever shown where this $500 million came from. I have never seen it, but everyone connected with the Board throws it around like it is a fact.

Rather ironic when willynuts and burpn'fart claim that farmers going to jail for selling a bag of wheat south of the border is a myth yet this mystical half billion dollar premium floats around like gospel. You be the judge. Maybe the cheque is still in the mail.

It like saying i am entitled to my entitlements.Jan Slomp is a dairy farmer and got his qouta almost for nothing compared to todays price. Qoatas haven't kept dairy farms small and neither did the CWB. If you are producing in Canada you have stay competitive with the rest of the world. An open and transparent marketplace will accomplice this. Not to say there will be no bumps inthe road

Having presented at 2 meetings (including one chatted about above), my sense is that Alberta farmers are not negative about the changes. They are wanting information and to understand so they adapt their businesses. At farm tech in Edmonton and again, the overall sense is optimism.

Five more meetings to go in Alberta with a completion of February 6 in Vegreville. There is a schedule of Saskatchewan meetings - a different approach in Saskatchewan but the desired outcome is the same - provide farmers basic information for decisions. The invitation is to come to the meetings and judge their success or failure for yourself.
