World Use of Oils & Fats for Energy Doubled Within 3 Years
On a global scale consumption of vegetable oils and animal fats for biofuel production continued to increase sharply in 2011, adopting a more and more important role as a demand factor and price determinant, says the newsletter Oil World.
“We estimate that roughly 20.5 million tonnes of oils & fats was used in the energy sector last year, representing about 11% of total consumption,” it says.
Soya oil became the largest feedstock for the biofuel sector with an estimated volume of 7.0-7.1 million tonnes, up steeply from 2.9 million tonnes four years earlier, says Oil World. ****seed oil and palm oil followed next with biofuel usage of 6.4 and 4.7 million tonnes, respectively.
“The energy sector has thus become the second-most important user after the food industry, followed by the oleochemical industry where roughly 18 million tonnes of oils & fats was used in 2011 according to our estimates
