From today's emalt. Argentina is a new entrant into the malt barley export market.
Argentina: Total barley supply estimated at 3.7 mln tonnes, of which malting barley at 2 mln tonnes
Price levels of Argentinean barley were very attractive and the export tax was lower for feed than for malting barley, therefore large amounts of feed barley were sold into the world market, an industry report said earlier in February.
An initial, theoretical balance sheet of Argentinean barley puts the total supplies at 3.7 mln tonnes this year, with feed barley supply of 1.7 mln tonnes.
The domestic demand for malting barley is estimated at 0.8 mln tonnes, and Argentina is forecast to ship 0.8 mln tonnes of malting barley to other South America nations.
The sales surplus for shipments abroad (to the EU, Russia, and China) is estimated at 0.4 mln tonnes.
These figures are not final; however, the small volumes of malting barley offered in Europe indicate a disappointingly small open surplus of malting barley. Prices FOB Argentina have risen from US$ 260,- earlier in January to US$ 300,- and above by the beginning of this month.
Reports are that 900,000 tonnes of feed barley were already shipped to Saudi Arabia, and the total to that destination may reach 1.2 mln tonnes.
