I am indifferent to this deal, but I am concerned with how this all played out.
Firstly with mayo denying any takeover attempts minutes before share trading was halted
because of a takeover. Then not allowing anyone else to make a bid on the company, why
not. Perhaps this is the best deal for Viterra and Canada but how will we ever know
when they didn't even let anyone else come to the table. I have a sneaking suspicion
that this may be the best deal for Mayo and the board, perhaps not so for the
shareholders. I am not entirely sure what it is yet but something doesn't pass the
        smell test on this one.

I have yet to see an auction where someone paid to much for it when there was only one
        bidder.

Richardson got a Thunder Bay terminal.

I grow durum too, and my local Viterra is now a Richardson, so "Yea!" to them getting east facing port facility.

I'm surprised no one has commented on Glencore.
Doesn't the name Mark Rich ring a bell?

rockpile: So this new entity and its founder has a checkered past with CIA investigation and all. Very interesting reading indeed. Maybe this new control of Canadian grain marketing will indeed bare watching in the years ahead.

Turning control of a good portion of our grain marketing to International Corps may not be in Canada's interests in the long run...time will tell.

One thing for sure...this Harper government could care less or they would have piped up by now IMHO.

I think a proverb which I read in a book as a kid fits quite nicely.

"Once an eagle was shot with an arrow, the eagle looked at the fashion of the shaft and cried...now we are being killed with our own feathers" (forgive me if it is not quite right I haven't seen the proverb in a long time)

Funny how we as farmers once owned everything that is Viterra and now we own nothing. However so I don't contradict myself we all sold it for the best price we could get and so I guess we can't complain.

I wonder if P & H and Patterson and other small independents will be able to effectively compete with the "Tier 1's" who will rule the market?

The next 20 years in the Western Canadian grain industry are going to be very interesting indeed.
