    Market Prospects 2012

This week's market prospects segment provides a good overall of contracting wheat. It is worth watching.

I'd really like to be able to view that protein differential chart on a regular basis if it was current and updated, even weekly. Is there someone in Canada that has a chart like that for public viewing? What about the North Dakota Wheat Comm.?

Lots of people are asking for this and working through the process/looking for alternatives.

Pricing and price visibility are one of the challenges moving ahead. Alberta has a good model in the weekly and daily prices survey done by ACPC.

Grade and protein spreads are going to be new for all of us. Will be looking for ideas as to how to do. You are right in that the US has been dealing with this for years and have approaches we could look in Western Canada.

Montana Wheat and Barley Committee has good pricing, basis and spread information as a starting point.

charliep, thanks for what you contribute to this web site, too often we get off track from the real aspect of markets and marketing. I'll check out that link.

By the way, grade and protein spreads are not new in western Canada. They were dealt with in the black box called the pooling system and most farmers didn't care how they were determined. Everbody was treated equally. Spreads had nothing to do with the market but rather the allocation of pool returns between farmers. I think there will be wider spreads in CWRS with high protein relatively higher prices and low protein bigger discounts. May be wrong.

The new world means spreads will vary between time periods and companies. They will visible for those that want to pay attention. They can also bite you in the butt if you don't.
