Best time to buy winter wheat seed?

When does a person buy winter wheat seed for
planting in August of 2012? Do the seed growers
advertise now, along with the spring seed run, or,
do they advertise after the spring seed run?

I am looking for the Ptarmigan variety and will
post in the AV classified section.

Wait until AFTER the 2012 Harvest in July to buy seed. Then yous get fresh new seed with good germ. Doesn't hurt to contact a few seed guys now to let them know that yous are looking 4 The Ptarmigan Variety, let them know roughly how much yous'll be needing and get on theys list. Now yer ready fer Seeding Winter Wheat in August..........

Seeded winter wheat for the first time
last fall.It was seeded on some land
that was chem fallowed for two years due
to being too wet.How much N should I put
on it this spring. It is starting to
green up now. I put 50 lbs of 11-51-0
down with the seed and now how much N?It
is on heavy clay soil. The field is too
wet yet but what frost there was is
gone. Was planning on putting down liquid
but how much is the question?

Food for you. Get a soil test, quick! Cuz
I did the same thing in 2006, skimped on
n, thinking surely two years of
Chemfallow, even when wet, would provide a
decent amount, but I should have put 140
pounds on. You could see where the
            overlaps were, and headlands were
beautiful with the extra. WW responds so
well to n. Do not skimp. But get a soil
            test to be sure.

Hey, who knows what a test may show? You
may be good. But I would like to save you
the 30 or 40 bushels an acre I left on the
table that year. Twas my own fault.

1 more question Freewheat, did you do a
split application or put it all down at
once?? We are in a drier area than you and
I am leaning to a split app.
