Dave, how do we define a farmer? You tell me?
It's not rocket science. I sure as heck know how to
define a non-farmer. Maybe that is a better
starting point. Residency is fairly cut and dry. I'm
we could gather some brilliant minds in a room
and come up with a reasonable definition of a
Saskatchewan farmer. Maybe you can come and
help seeing as you are all-knowing, oh wise one.

Maybe a bit off topic, but I seen smoke today. Thought is was just someone burning sloughs. By the time I got to it, in about 15 minutes there was black smoke and it had jumped the highway and into grass. There were at least 100 people and 3 fire departments there.

When these communities disappear because of the transient large corporate farms, who is going to put the fire out that gets started by a cigarette but or bad semi brakes?

No one knows the cause but it could have been a bad one without people around.

dave is pointing out a hypocrisy, good job.

I hate-hate-hate the fact land is being bid up,but i'm
willing to play ball as long as everyone plays by the
        same.

What about the old threads about people here buying
up brazil land,i don't even want to dumpster dive
        those old threads

the worst thing is the fact that super subsidized
farmers from americas and europes are coming here
with tax payers dollars lining their wallets.

I think you should have to live here(at least in Canada) if you want to own Sask farmland. I don't care how many foreigners own it as long as they are actively farming it. The sad part is there has been countless lost farmers(young farm kids) because of such shitty circumstances until the tide finally turned and now everyone wants a piece of the action, unfortunately it is nearly impossible to start from nothing. So without outside investors the value of our land would suffer. If you weren't born into it or are using someone else's money(investor's) it will be an aweful steep climb. Anyone with the balls to try would be a better man than me.

Lakenheath-There are a whopping 33 million of us. We better hope the world allows us to invest in their countries and sell to their countries or Canada is toast as you know it. Potatoes i can kinda get, milk maybe, but Canola? Wheat? Durum? We hardly consume any of those products. We need buyers to look at us a suppliers in a free market. Or they might be awefully interested in buying elsewhere first.

Of course PEI would not consume all their potatoes. Question is does Canada? I dont know or care, potatoes is not same as grain. And yes, if there is a fire, i will drop whatever i am doing to help. People have been talking about depopulation of rural Sk for 40 years. This is not what is driving rural depopulation.

Dave - I don't think China is going to say no to
buying field peas, for example, from
Saskatchewan because Brad Wall tweaked the
Saskatchewan Land Ownership Act to protect
local farmers from foreign speculative investment
driving up land prices beyond what grain farmers
                can afford to pay.

Your theory comes along with some pretty wild
assumptions of how the world is going to do
business now and into the future.

Did you cut and paste that out of your capitalist

It does not really matter cause it isn't going to happen. What you are asking is that Sk farmers be the only ones allowed to own SK farmland. That is not a tweak, that is a major slap in the face of many individuals. Got a better chance of CWB coming back as a single desk. Maybe friends of the CWB can finance this on next.

Also, what proof do you have that it is foriegn investors and not farmers themselves that are driving land values up? Could it be proven that without foreign investors that land would be cheaper today. We had 4-5 quarters sell at home to investors but they are not foreign they are from Alberta. ALso some sold to ASsiniboia group. Not sure on their ownership structure.

Well Davie Boy lets just say we both are
at opposite sides on this one.
Yea should have smoozed the guy that
sold maybe, but he has two young nephews
and a brother inlaw that just bought
some poorer dirt and they didnt get a
                        chance.
I think you will see that if this keeps
going on we will all work for these
                        companies like our grandfathers did
                        overseas.
                        Time will tell.
Also dave your good with the Fed program
if I remember right, is it true that you
can go from 4 to 100 with a healthy
margin and screw up for a few years oh
lets say 4 and the Programs will pay.
Again use High rent, High labor, High
                        inputs, check on its way.
Now Dave you also grow Lentils.
two and half bags of moldy shit on 12
                        quarters.
If I remember my lentil days thats not
                        to good.
                        Have a great day!!!!!!

Do your research Dave. It is a tweak. It was a
minor tweak in the Act that opened the Province's
land up for sale. Have u read the act and research
the recent changes? Do some diligence please. A
little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

And why are you bringing the CWB into this
conversation. Let it go. It has nothing to do with
what we are talking about here.

Do a little research into the Assiniboia group. See
what u come up with, Dave.

Dave. How would u feel if Cargill started buying
up farmland in Saskatchewan. They are in South
America and they are in Australia. Althought in an
exclusive interview with the head of Cargill in
November 2011, he stated Cargill will never be a
land owner and has no intention of becoming one.
