FYI - there have been a group of Quebec Professors
campaigning for free post secondary education in
that Province for quite some time and I heard one of
them interviewed on the radio last week and they
are certainly encouraging these students to agitate
for their rights to a free play. If you want to talk
about the cost of post secondary education you've
come to the right person. My daughter got her
BEng. from McGill. As an out of Province student,
her tuition was much higher than either Quebec
students or Foreign students (who were subsidized
by the Feds). But even at that and including living
expenses, it was cheaper than anything in Alberta.
That was 12 years ago.
To add to the parable, after McGill, she was offered
scholarships to attend any of 4 US universities to
pursue her Masters, 2 being ivy league. She chose
Cornell, got her MA and was then invited to stay
and pursue a PhD program, which she completed 2
years ago. Here is the kicker. Tuition was over
$40,000 US per year fully paid for by the University.
On top of that they paid her an annual living
allowance to be there. After 8 years, came to over
half a million US. Cost to us - $0. They do things
totally different down there and no, there are no
strings attached. Today, both she and her hubby
are doing research at Princeton.
