I keep noticing alot of canola still available at retailers. To hit 21 million acres you would think their wouldn't be a bag left.

I know some had leftovers from last year but it isn't adding up to 21 million acres.

      Just an observation.

Yea was at Vittera yesterday for seed
wheat and their shed looked really full.
Local Blairs fert also had canola if
needed. I think the 21 mill was a
wishfull thinking put out by a few grain
companies to cool down the markets a
bit. Their is going to be alot of canola
fields out their but no way will it get
to 21 million acres no way! Oh yea
sprayed a field of canola stubble on
monday. Guess what the volunteers were
all dead from sat frost. yea canola
makes it through frost just fine!! Wink
        wink.

11 million acres seeded now. After it freezes, reseed 10 million. Adds up to 21 million.

That must be the math their using.
Could not believe the plants were totally
yellow and dying thought neigbour sprayed
            our field by mistake.

I think they will be lucky to see 16-17 mill, jmo.
We had canola survive -5 for five hrs last year and coditions were dry. No rain for two weeks before or after that frost. A light frost with good moisture and high humidity should do very little damage. Very little canola up now, will be a fair amount on Sat though. Time will tell. Damage will depend on how long it does freeze and how low temps get. I would not keep my hopes up on wiped out frosted canola at this point.

If the growing point is still green and
you have moisture it will come back. IF it
is green. Yea snow and -3 for most of
friday night will be interesting. Our
                early stuff will be up.
Oh well something to complain about HA HA.
But yes the 17 to 18 will probably be
                correct acreage.

Markets seem more concerned about the demand side than the supply. US$$ hitting key resistance levels, lets see how that plays out.

Do three million less acres at a average
yield and crushers dont have to worry
                    about the demand side slipping.

If the growing point is green and there is very little moisutre it will come back, seen it, been there before. Also a wet crop will not freeze nearly as much as a dry one. Time will tell.
Regardless lets hope that it straightens out and those not done get done.

I agree. Lots to go in our area. But the total
                        seeded will be way down.

If all this rain comes we will be at close to 6inches since May 1. That's more than we usually get in a growing season. It also shuts down seeding until June. But the temperatures are not co-operating with what's seeded either. Those plants need some heat.

Thinking of using the heavy harrow to put out some canola if the soil dries enough to go on and top dressing it later. Only because there is quite a bit of canola available, the ground is black where I want to put it and it gets something done while the drills wait.
