Does anyone know when a renegade member of a Hutterite colony decides to leave, do they leave with anything more than the clothes on their back. The fellow who cleans my grain had a young man from a colony as a hired man, he stayed with him a couple of years then the dream of big money in the oilpatch lured him away. He was a good kid.

I think their success is based on the premise that everything is done for the good of the colony, as a whole everyone should then benefit.

The ability to drive new equipment almost made me ask if they were taking any new members, lots of personal sacrifices but maybe worth it. Good food too!!

The equipment for those 25 farms you talk about is quite a bit different than the larger equipment the colonies run. But each family is, according to their tax return, below the poverty line. The comparison to 25 smaller farms in the same area is not the same.

And maybe you could explain the 100s of millions of dollars the hutterites never paid in taxes as they were considered a church. Not hard to make it with that kind of backing.

If the 25 separate small farmers decided to pool their
machinery requirements they could own some fancy
machinery too - it's all about choices. How many
small farmers raising a family on 400 acres are in a
higher tax bracket than the individual hutterite
families? Not the fault of the Hutterites that primary
        agriculture is not more profitable.
Good job the Hutterites decided to offer to pay more
taxes way back in '61 wasn't it? If there was a
loophole before that maybe the Government should
        bear some responsibility?
Seems you are just trotting out the usual spite and
jealousy that goes with Hutterite bashing.

Nope, not hutterite bashing at all.

Its a known fact they didn't pay taxes because they were considered a church. If most family farms could have that equivalent money today they would all be better off and you are right there would be alot more section and two section farms.

And I can name a few towns around me that would still have schools if that was the fact as well, but they would also have schools if the hutterites were in them instead of having a teacher supplied.

As My kids would say LOL. I'm born and raised Western Canadian and probably over half way through my stay on earth, done nothing but farmed my whole life. That being said, I don't remember a time that farming had been this profitable. 13.00-14.00 canola, 7.00 wheat and durum, 13.50-14.50 flax, 9.50-12.50 green peas, 18.00-20.00 small green lentils, 13.50 canaryseed, 6.00 malt & 4.50 feed barley. This is why everyone wants a piece of the action now!!!!!

Sask. what is making this land so valuable to them? Does much of it have mineral rights with the title?

So farmaholic is it profitable enough to support a
family farm off 400 acres? if so how many years has
that been the case in the last decade- last 2 decades?

Get real Grassfarmer. You either change with the times or get left behind. The Hutterites may be able to do it on 400 acres per family because of communal living, everything is shared. I've said (locally) before, I could move mountains too if I had a labour force that worked for room and board and not much else. Can you farm grass on 2.5 quarters and have the lifestyle you want?

Farmaholic, That's a "no" then? makes your post
about profitability rather irrelevant doesn't it?

It seems the ones who want to buy are all for restrictions on who can buy(as long as it is not on them), and the ones who want to sell are all for "let the highest bidder get it"?

I suspect when the day comes and the buyers become sellers they will suddenly be in "let the highest bidder get it" camp?

Look beyond today? We'll all be sellers someday...or our kids will be! Why would you want less money for your land? Why would you want the government to put restrictions on it so you would get pennies on the dollar?
