    Feed Barley in Alberta????

Barley imports... exports... $6 feed barley in Alberta?

HOW on earth is this possible?

NO Cwb single desk to hold up the barley price at $4-5/bu... this is simply impossible.

'Designated Area' Barley growers must have all lost their minds... and don't flock to sell feed barley at CWB prices any longer...at $1-2/bu below market price???

The malt barley guys must be in a BIG rage... feed barley cannot more than Malt!!!

This is simply NOT FAIR in Canada!!!

"The latest surge in U.S. corn prices is raising feed cash barley values in western Canada, combined with low supplies from last year’s small crop.
Bids in the southern Alberta feedlot belt were at $5.75 to $6.00 last week, up from $5.25 as recently as mid-May. Barley prices have regained a more direct relationship with both American and Manitoba and Alberta corn, now that imports are less of an issue."...

Don't it, tiny tim. Maybe, just maybe the
feed price quoted is a phoney one liking
the ones that Vittera used ta quote in the
olden days, would not pay it, butt just
quote it ta stir up Sh*t storms, among
    Angribusiness boys/girls..........

Tom - feed buyers are just scrambling
right now for feed barley and feed wheat
to finish out crop year Alberta feedlot
      and Fraser Valley mill sales.

Picture Butte (feedlot alley) 48lb bids
are now as high as $285/MT ($6.20/bu)
for immediate movement. New crop bids
heard as high as $255/MT ($5.55/bu)
      delivered O/N/D.

These are just excellent bids for
growers to price into right now.

Not sure how the malt market fits into
this right now as buyers are quiet.
Doesn't two-row malt prices have to
surge to $6/bu or higher to be
      competitive with this red-hot feed
      market?

The malt market appears to be getting
their butts kicked by the feed market
      right now.

Feed barley at $6 means there has to be a drop in calf prices. If that drop is too steep, then look for more cows hitting the markets this fall. Look for more pastures and hayland being broke up for grain/oilseed production.
Then in a few years there is a glut og grain and prices crash. It's a viscious cycle....the only thing different this time is we're fast running out of dummies who will raise cows!

              what a collapse in feeder cattle . . .
limit down $3/cwt again this morning.
fried U.S. pastureland is forcing a lot of
              cows to market right now.

              agree . . . a setback in cash feeder
cattle prices is in the works.

but what comes around, goes around.

I'm probably a fairly typical cattle guy in Alberta. Have a 5 year plan, started in 2007, to be completely out of cattle.
Breaking up the last of what I can this fall. Have gone from 150 cows to 50 this year. Might calve them out one more time......or might not!
Have spent nothing on fences or facilities or equipment since 2007.
Just putting in my time until I can escape! Turned 60 this spring and took my CPP early.
I'm one of the last guys in my area with cows (east of Red Deer, Alberta) in my area. Most escaped shortly after 2003. A lot pulled the plug in 2009(drought). None of these are ever coming back.
Looking forward to spending my winters in the sun!
