Sub Soil? Any one going to try!

We are going to demo one of the agritrends
machines on our quarter we couldn't seed later
this fall. Wondered if any one else is trying this
new technology. Ok old but 26 years direct
seeding one inch no disturbance has to effected
    the land.

What type of machine is that? Got a link
    or pic.

How did the Kelly harrow work out for you.
Seems like a decent machine to me, but the
    distributor of them scares me.

Kelly harrowed canola was seeded later but
flowered same as may 21 st seeded. Hrs on
canola stubble looks awesome. Had some wild
oats compared to the rest but got them. So you
      don't trust Aaron?

That's kind of a loaded question. Aaron
is a good guy, just the south american
equipment the where selling was shit,
though the newer model seems to addressed
most of the quality issues. Just like any
salesman you can only believe half of what
        you are told.

"Believing only half of what you are told"
same could be said about the internet.
They seemed like good people though from
          my limited dealings with them.

I like Aaron. The first Akron shit he sold had
issues. But the Kelly harrow from Australia seems
built good. The reason we demo products is to
learn before you buy. The sub soil machine might
work. Will get pictures when arrives.

I'm not knocking subsoiling but I was once told because of our extreme yearly freeze/thaw cycle that subsoiling wasn't necessary. I've also seen dry years that crack the soil badly--everyone heard the joke about losing tools in those cracks. Trying never hurt though!! Good luck

Are you talking about the AgrowPlow SF3? They have
                a good reputation.

I tried the agroplow last year . It loosons the ground so much that it was wet when seeding and pulled some ruts have not noticed ayield increase yet. first yaer might have been from uneven seedbed

I would watch how much u do. It definitely loosens the soil but maybe too much. Very time consuming but the agroplow is a good machine. May also have to pick a few rocks when your done.

Saskfarmer, you have 2 much time on your hands if you are burning fuel and time with that plow. Why not buy another section and put your time and effort into farming that.

Good points but I got that one quarter I couldn't
seed, thanks to my rm not fixing a road for two
                        years.

i adapted a single leg subsoiler that puts gravel behind the leg from 8 inches down to 20inches deep and 3inches wide to aid drainage.
                          pulled with steiger.

                            Hedgehog,

How does your subsurface drainage work for silting up in the washed rock for the drainage chanel?

Do you make grid drainage chanels to distribute the subsurface under other areas in the same field if possible... to avoid water running off into neighbours fields?

Do you have inlet areas where the rock comes up to the surface to allow perculation into the drainage chanels?

Is there any good internet sights that discuss this kind of water management system?

Thanks Hedgehog, we are all looking for better ways to manage our water and use the rain water in the best way possible! Do you have collection reservoirs?

                            Cheers!

tom, i can put in a plastic pipe below the gravel at about 20 metre intervals and cross it without the pipe, just the gravel. you have to bring the gravel up to the cultivation depth, 8 inches in my case, or to the surface if you want.
the gravel will silt up eventually maybe 50yrs.
the law here forces your neighbour to accept water from you, he cant stop you. how do you upload pics to this site?
