Why are Our Governments So Crooked?

In Alberta the latest scandal is wild expense accounts in Alberta Health. The CFO of Alberta Health has been fired. A board director has resigned. It looks like only the tip of the iceberg!
On the federal scene the Harper government has been caught cooking the books on the F-35 fighter jet deal, dirty campaign tricks, etc. etc....one could go on for ever!
Is it too much to ask for honest politicians and civil servants? Are they all little more than a den of thieves?

Not that crooked compared to a lot of
    countries

Not much better than the worst of other countries, either!

Is there any truth to the statement that a country gets the government it deserves?

Its a tough fricken thankless job. For the
thousands of things done right, one wrong
        makes the news.

Human nature is fundamentally corrupt so
yes, it is too much to expect honest
          polititians.

            Compare Harpers promises vs. say
            Chretiens though, and one looks
downright saintly. Hint: the Saintly one
can speak both official languages. LOL

            A few promises:

            GST dropped Check

            Wheat board banished Check

            Gun registry banished Check

            Child care benefit Check

Tax credits for sport kids check

Harper aint perfect, nobody is, but he
is a dam site better than anyone we have
had federally in anything like recent
memory. I would say if you look at the
platform, and look at what has been
            accomplished, they are doing mighty
            fine, relatively speaking.

Just look south at the disaster they
have going there, a guy elected based on
that he is half black, who no one knows
for sure where he is from!

I am glad to be Canadian, especially now
that I have a great wheat crop, and can
sell it officially how I wish to.
            Thank you Mr. Harper!!!!

PM Harper has done better than any other nation's leader... PERIOD.

Thanks PM Harper and Minister Ritz... that was a VERY hard struggle to wrestle the CWB soother away form the NFU's mouth...now supply management will need to pay up for livestock feed... I am sure they can afford it!

              Cheers!!!

              God Bless Canada!!!!!

The problem in government is that the cream
doesnt come to the top - its something else. Sad
but true that managers are not selected for their
                knowledge or level headedness.

So bad decisions and frivolous waste of taxpayer
                dollars is acceptable.

And all we can say is we get what we pay for?

                  "A thankless job"

What a damning argument to use. How safe and easy to say. How little really said. And it is the first words spoken by the least informed ratepayers and citizens as well as by the supposedly most worldly amongst us.

When ever some one comes up with that diatribe "a thankless job"; it makes one wonder how poor performance it would take to conclude that it was really an example of a "job done piss poorly"

The dumb guys are most likely to have the best grasp of what drives the decision makers who would have it no other way; as well as their resultant imperfect decisions.

Thankless? are you kidding us. I'd love some of that thanklessness, be selected by a so called party not the general public (money and the leader decides who can run not the population, money comes from special interest oil, bankers, or unions for example) Once you are the party candidate, you cannot have any ideas of your own, you simply represent the ideas and decisions of a small group of people half a country away usually.

If successfully elected your job then is to
                      1. fill a seat in Ottawa at voting time, after you recieve instructions as to what to vote. Be capeable of saying the words yea or nay.
                      2. deflect all constituent concerns to the minister responsible for the constituents' concern. If you are the minister your decision has already been decided by the small group controlling your party.
                      3. Be able to read off party cue cards when answering questions if you have no card a simple no comment will suffice.
                      4. Make sure you last 2 terms, and then be sure your mailing address is correct to receive a pension greater than what half the population ever receives as a wage and you can still go to work at a real job at the upper end of things after you have all the inside connections made. Kinda like the mafia you become a "made" person.

We need to have more representation as individuals through our elected local mps or mlas and not as it is now where we have to pick the best of the worst case scenerios for us.
