Friday Crop Report!

Todays storm late this afternoon puts us
at a little over one inch this week. No
downpours with wind.
Canola is now slowly finishing up. Aster
Yellows are easy to spot even at 120 Km
an hour from the road. Heard of one
field north of us that is 100% aster
Yellow so virtually a match will fix
that one.
The leaf hopper has done damage on HRS
and Barley.
Canola will stay at a 6 nothing special
for 2012.
Hrs doesnt matter if it was sprayed with
Tilt then Prosario their is still
fusarium showing up to some degree. Yea.
HRS is a 7.
Durum has stem magot which is showing up
all over the area. 7
Barley is a 8 ok looking better this
week.
Oats is a 9 looking Ok so far.
Peas took a shit kicking from last weeks
downpour and wind. Laying flat all
facing east. Shutting down. Now the Damb
geece are eating it. Mess.
5 is the rating.
So to sum up the week nice heat with
storms some nights we missed the big
ones. Melville had hail. Wind has done
damage in all crops from heavy rain and
wind. One field of canola twisted so bad
its turning. Looks like you pushed it
with a pusher.
Conclusion our area will produce a
average to below average crop. Canola is
the big disapointment.

What has the leaf hopper done to the Wht. and Bly? Can't see any damage on ours? Bly just looks sick..

Early durum 5-7 days from dessication. Looks really good and should make 60. Late durum nearly filled and looks to be 50 ish. Peas half dessicated and look 45-50. Red lentils 7-14 days from dessicating and real good. Estimating at 35-40. Early hailed large green lentil ready to dessicate and caught another small storm yesterday morning so maybe 18 or so by the looks of the pods on the ground. Late large green lentils 15-20 days from dessicating and look 30 plus. Canola...... well well well lets just say this is a little unknown. Armyworms becoming a problem and the plane hasn't made it yet after 2 straight days of wind. Gonna try on my own tomorrow morning as bad 1/4 cant wait. Still guessing canola at around 40 on average. Stands are thick and 4' high. This area hasn't seen a meaningful rain since June 21st and I am amazed by the condition of the crop through all the heat. Received 3 showers for a whopping total of 8 tenths in the last 40 days. All in all an above average crop here.

SF3, what damage are you seeing in wheat, that was caused by the leaf hopper?

WDV is a seedling disease infection so are
you seeing those affects now? Is it winter
wheat? Was it confirmed with PCR?

It is not uncommon to find Aster Yellows
in canola most years. However, this year
the infection rates in canola are as
high 10-40% in many areas.

Says Evans, "However, our Agri-Coach
professionals began to notice unusual
disease symptoms in wheat fields
adjacent to infested canola fields
together with very high levels of leaf
hoppers."

In infested wheat fields the disease has
taken the form of yellowish to reddish
foliage along with premature dying of
randomly scattered wheat plants at
anthesis or early milk stage.

Areas such as Swan River, MB and the
northeastern corner of Saskatchewan have
up to 30-40% of bleached or dying heads
observed in wheat fields infected with
Aster Yellows.

The symptoms have also been observed in
central and northern Alberta. This will
likely result in significant yield loss.

Diseased wheat, barley and canola
samples gathered throughout the prairies
by Agri-Coach field personnel have been
confirmed positive for Aster Yellows in
tests performed CFIA approved laboratory
Phyto-Diagnostics Ltd run by Dr. Peter
Ellis.

Additional samples are being forwarded
to Agriculture Canada personnel for
testing.

"It is felt that this year the Aster
Yellows infestation occurred as a
consequence of unusually high levels of
leaf hoppers arriving in prairie Canada
from the US in mid-May to early-June.

"Early spring tests of the leaf hoppers
by Manitoba Agriculture confirmed higher
than normal levels of phytoplasmal
infection.
Their is the answer!!!!!!!!!
