    Stagger up your seeding!!!

Just went on an extensive crop check.
From what I can tell, the early seeded
canola, (May 15th ish), is most impacted
by the aster yellows disease. Late may,
early June shows maybe an aster an acre.
Also, the late stuff did not drown out
like the early stuff did. My late canola
is awesome, if it makes it. Need a five
    week no frost timeline.

I know every year is different, and
every area is different, but just
something to think about for future
    reference. It seems almost everyone
slapped their canola in first, like it
was a race or something. Around here
drought is never an issue, so I guess
they are trying to beat fall frost, but
I usually seed some first, some last,
just to spread weather risk a bit.

    Staggered seeding to fight asters?
Perhaps. Just an observation I made
today. The earlier the canola was
seeded, the more the impact of this
    nasty disease.

    Just a heads up.

U will get your 5 weeks freewheat. Put the order
in, done deal. No need to sweat it and hooray for
you. Here 8/10 early is better. Late canola usually
    dont amount to much

We always seed canola last because the canola stubble is always drier, warmer and trash free to seed into a WET May.
Been working just fine for years.
In the fall, usually swath canola first, then wheat. Combine which ever is dry enough. Put wheat through the dryer, till canola is dry.
Seen alot of early seeded canola wrecks over the years.

I agree with stagger seeding but not for canola yields. Yes the aster yellows is more prevelant in early seeded but do the plant counts...and count the pods...count slecrotinia infection...i did... I would guess that early seeded will still yield more depending on the situation. The late season always looked better ( more vegetative growth) especially this year with the early so crappy looking from all its problems...The late season is at serious frost risk as you have pointed out....

Freewheat my experience is the opposite of yours. My late seeded Canola has the highest aster yellow infection, the earliest seeded the least. I wish I could of got rolling sooner.

          Kindersley area.

Free wheat in eastern sask I agree drought is not
a issue. Our later canola is doing just fine my
early may 10 to 16 aster yellow.

Just an unusual early infestation of leaf hoppers that had a higher than normal infection rate of a virus. 1 in 30 year event? But you are right, staggering your seeding date can reduce exposure to certain issues some years. Even seeding varieties with different maturities can reduce environment risks.
Interesting thought on "early seeding" - Sometimes even if the nieghbor gets seeding the day before him, he is seeding too early - LOL. Some guys in this area think end of April is too early, some - Mid May. Some just cant get their ship together until after the May long weekend.
All I know is canola seeded after the 25th may is a very risky proposition come fall(this area). You can do nothing to prevent frost damage in the fall to canola.

Re seeding dates. Because of our "later" seeding date than we normally seed(May 12-13 first stuff in this year), this year would be the first year in a long time that I can remember that our canola never suffered spring frost damage. There's always a trade-off.

Most canola reps. will tell you to seed as early as possible for Max. yields..Our canola that was hailed to the ground July 3rd will be our best crop ...if it makes it...It grew 30 inches, and is full bloom in 30 days..

I grew the highest yielding canola crop in the RM of Ethelbert, MB ever.

                    57.8 bu/ac.

                    9553 Roundup Ready.

                    Seeded June 6th.

                    Clean-till, broadcase N seed-placed P and S.

Sprayed once with .33l/ac of 540g gly.

According to the "experts" this shouldn't have worked at all. But it did.

                    Every area is different

I agree with what you're seeing freewheat, same here in this area.
