Grass Vs. Grain Fed Beef Discussion Turns Ugly

    Josh_Flint
Editor of Prairie Farmer, a Farm Progress publication dedicated to Illinois agriculture.

I don’t know about you, but when I see the commercials about malnourished children in Africa, my heart breaks. Apparently, not all folks feel the same way.

Last weekend, I was on a “survival skills” weekend. To say the crowd was environmentally conscious would be an understatement. Of course, the campfire topic of conversation frequently turned to food. I was there to have a good time, so I tried to stay silent.

On the second day, my buddy thought it would be humorous to goad me into a debate with these folks. The topic was grass-fed beef. I explained why I have no problem with corn-fed beef. They looked at me as if I’d just dumped millions of gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

One person even said, “I don’t know how you could even argue that corn-fed beef is better than grass fed.” Not making much headway in the economics, efficiency or taste department, I pulled out the “lower-class deserves animal protein too” argument. In their infinite wisdom, the group agreed lower class folks should be eating more fresh fruits and vegetables. Not wanting to explain the cost/supply ramifications of finding fresh veggies in East St. Louis, I leaned back and rolled my eyes.

The conversation continued. The group began to trash the world’s food distribution system. Then they said we should get back to the days when everyone grew their own food. At this point, my friend was very sorry he’d started down this path. Becoming outraged, he made the point that many starving people in this world eat because of U.S. farmers. “What, would you have a significant portion of the world population starve, in the name of shunning modern farming practices?” he asked.

To our complete disbelief, the conversation ringleader piped up and said, “I’m fine with that.”

Rather than start a shouting match, we shook our heads and walked away. We both couldn’t believe that the same folks who were gung ho on saving the earth and preaching tolerance would willingly let people starve for the sake of “getting back to our roots.”

FYI: one of the arguments brought up about “getting back to our roots” was that man was initially created to be a hunter/gatherer. Again, the same people who were intrigued by the evolutionary process of insects were unwilling to admit that agriculture was a phenomenal invention.

Since I was too busy taking deep breaths, I didn’t have time to point out that they all wouldn’t have a job if society went back to the good ole days. They’d be too busy trying to fatten up that cow before they ran out of meat. Here’s a tip: feed it corn!

Awesome stuff Tom. Some friends fed me some
grass fed crap a while back. You know the
organic all natural stuff. Prior to eating i received
a well rounded education on its superiority,
nutritional value, taste and tenderness. These
folks had paid 50% more than what i had paid for
a beef from the neighbors. Good cattle stewards
who did not implant and fed high quality barley
ration feed. If the animal was sick it was given the
appropriate meds etc and well cared for. Now
even the mention of pennicIlin to these folks and a
huge argument started all over. Any ways ate the
stuff and said nothing, all the while friends proud
as peacocks of their dinner creation. Lets just say
    my dogs eat better.

Bunch of crap Tom - but that's likely why you posted
      it.
Portraying people who are environmentally conscious
as callous and uncaring about the worlds starving is
quite false. Most of them envisage a better way to
feed the world although not all are grounded in the
realities just the same as in the conventional world.

Makes more sense to me to use the lower quality land
to graze cattle, the better quality land to grow grain
or vegetables. We could certainly feed more people by
these means than doing it the way we do now.

It's hard to make the argument grass-fed beef is
expensive to produce when corn is hitting $8. I can
certainly produce and sell it at commodity beef price
while having substantially less impact on the
      environment than the conventional model.

As for the quality/taste issue I find that rather
subjective. Our customers tell us our product is the
best beef they have ever had, the demand for our
product is growing 50% a year. We've had our beef
served in some high end restaurants in Calgary where
a steak is $60 and it's another $10 if you want
potatoes with it. The restaurant said it was the best
grass-fed beef they had found in the province and
their customers were full of compliments.

Yeah.... I guess all grass-fed is crap and the hormone
antibiotic loaded, tasteless stuff out of the feedlot
      is the real deal.

My steaks against yours grass.. Anytime anyplace
anywhere. Most Of these customers of yours
probably couldnt tell good beef from 3 day
roadkill. It is a perception, marketing scam that it
is better. Im happy for you that you are able to
make a killing off of these clowns. Ever hear of
the ole story the emperors new clothes?? U sir
        are the emperor.. Well done

I didnt quite say correctly. The beef we eat is not
feedlot beef, but local, well fed animals. I do
agree with the feedlot scenario grassy. None of
that here. It is only a grass fed vs barley ration
          debate from me :-)

JD Green, that's sheer arrogance - what happened to
            the customer always being right?
Do you breed, rear, fatten and market your beef
            direct to consumers?

Wrong grassy that is not arrogance. ArrOgance is
displayed by the vast majority of your customers
who wouldnt know a bull from a steer. Because
they come from the majority of urbanites, they
assume us backyard hicks know nothing about
quality food etc. Not downplaying your biz as i
respect and appreciate all debate, however i know
              better.

You gotta be kidding me. I Boycotted Montanas when they decided not to serve garlic toast with a steak for demand reasons. You mean to say there is actually a restaurant that will charge extra for a potato. You call them high end. Tell us who that is so we can all avoid them. Mind you I cook the best steak at home anyway just when one pays the bucks should actually have something good. I probably should test your steaks myself.

When I protested to the server about no garlic toast she said it was upper managements decision. There was no tip cause the steaks were not done right and there was no garlic toast and I have never been back.

All of this reminds me of something a DM at AB AG
told me over lunch about 25 years ago. " If you put 2
farmers across the table from each other in the coffee
shop, you'll come up with three differing points of
view on any and every topic every time".

                          "not arrogance" - "however i know better" - that's
priceless JD Green. You have never tasted my beef but
you know my customers are all fools because they are
buying an inferior product. Don't you think customers
are able to make up their own minds and have their
own opinions on what is good and what isn't?
While taste comparisons will always be subjective as I
said, I consider your dismissal of consumer demand
and preferences as arrogant and suicidal from a
                          business point of view.

shouldnt it be a feather in grassy cap
that hes serving to the top end rather
than tall poppy syndrome trying to cut
                            him down.

i dont think he actually stated his
steaks were better he just passed on
customer perception that is the key.

I will put my money where my mouth is. Please setup a sale of your product. If you would like to do this I am all for it. Not talking 100 bux worth of steaks. Please lets get together and discuss a minimum 1/4 cut and wrapped. I can arrange for delivery anywhere out of alberta. I will have a specifice cut and wrap instruction order.
